"It's a beautiful race, beautiful day," said Clark, who led a field of 41 finishers.

Coming in second was Avon's Steve Hunt, 48, who came across the finish line in 23:50. The course takes runners past Glander Fields where youth baseball opening day festivities were taking place. Hunt, when he ran past the fields, paused when he heard the national anthem before resuming the race.

"I wasn't going to catch (Clark) anyway. But even if I could catch him I would have stopped. There are better things than winning - like having the right to be here," Hunt said.

Thomas Linse, 17, was Newtown's fastest finisher and placed third with a time of 24:54. Linse edged out fellow 17-year-old Newtown High School runner Jack Swanson, who completed the race in 24:56. Linse, a member of Troop 70, ran in his scout outfit.

Sandy Hook's Pat Boily, 49, rounded out the top five with a time of 26:05.

The top female finisher was Newtown's Chelsea Fowler 13, who finished in 31:31. The next fastest female competitor was Tracy Van Buskirk, 61, who finished in 31:42.

Allison Estes, 7, was second in the 18 and under age category, behind Fowler, with a time of 45:21. Stephanie Zamary, 22, of Newtown, won the female 19 to 49 age category; Newtown's Kerri Rivera, 48, was second in the division with a time of 36:22. Newtown's Cathy Swanson, 53, was second behind Van Buskirk in the 50 and over division, completing the race in 34:01. Linse and Jack Swanson were one-two in the 18 and under grouping. Hunt and Boily were first and second in the 19 to 49 range. Sandy Hook's Gordon Dunn, 56, was second, behind Clark, in the 50 and over age group, finishing in 29:11.
