DANBURY — For the 2013-14 concert season Western Connecticut State University and Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra created a joint chamber concert series. The performers are university music faculty or orchestra members.  The idea is to enhance the musical education of university students, while providing the region with great classical music performed by outstanding professional performing artists.

The final concert of the series will be performed Sunday, February 9, at 3 pm, at Ives Concert Hall. The concert hall is within White Hall, on WCSU’s midtown campus, at White Street and Fifth Avenue. The program’s pieces offer a great variety of musical styles, ranging from a Beethoven trio partly based on a popular song to a tribute to the victims of 12/14, written last year by a promising new composer with roots in Danbury.

Paul Frucht, 24, is in the doctoral program at Juilliard, where he received a masters and several awards for his compositions. He attended Danbury public schools, including Rogers Park Middle School, where Dawn Hochsprung was assistant principal. Ms Hochsprung later became principal of Sandy Hook Elementary School, and lost her life in the December 2012 massacre at the school.

Mr Frucht’s piece entitled Dawn is dedicated to her, the other 25 victims, and their families. The seven-minute work has been performed several times in New York and Connecticut, including Rogers Park last June. Mr Frucht will be present at the concert and will speak about his piece.

The complete program is Aria in Classic Style (Grandjany), Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano (Martinu), Dawn (Frucht), Six Studies in English Folk-Song (Vaughan Williams), and Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano in B flat Major (Beethoven).

The performers of the RSO-WCSU collaboration are pianist Jerry Steichen, RSO’s musical director; Wendy Kerner Lucas, RSO’s principal harpist; Edward Wojtowicz, RSO’s principal clarinetist; violinist Victoria Paterson, a WCSU music faculty member; Nick Hardie, who served as assistant principal cellist in RSO’s December concert; and Kerry Walker, who is the RSO principal flutist and the WCSU Flute Professor.
