Rotary Contributes To The Hord Foundation

George A. Coleman, deputy commissioner of education, Connecticut State Department of Education recently addressed a meeting of Newtown Rotary Club. Mr. Coleman discussed the challenges of improving higher education opportunities for minority students. He pointed out that the Hord Foundation has been instrumental in supporting the significant growth of minority students from the Danbury area who are enrolled in institutions of higher learning. Mr Coleman is also a member of the Hord Foundation’s board of trustees.

The purpose of the Hord Foundation is to promote education and enhance career opportunities of young minority people by providing postsecondary school scholarships or other financial assistance for educational purposes.

Also in attendance was Samuel R. Hyman, a member of the Hord Foundation’s board of trustees, who was presented with a check by Rotary Club President Dick Sturdevant. Included in the check presentation was Rotarian Paul Lux, a member of the Hord Foundation’s board of trustees, and Rotarian Randy Lewis, a member of the Hord Foundation’s board of advisors.

Newtown Rotary is an organization of business and professional men and women who donate their expertise, time and funds to support local and international projects that help people in need and promote understanding among cultures. Their motto is “Service Above Self.” Newtown Rotary meets every Monday at 6 pm at The Inn at Newtown.
