NEW HAVEN - Sandy Hook resident Hanna Roehrs took home a pair of ribbons following Saturday's opening reception and awards ceremony for "Weavers' Heaven," the 2017 exhibition being presented by Handweavers' Guild of Connecticut (HGC).

The biennial exhibition for HGC is on view at River Street Gallery at Fairhaven Furniture, 72 Blatchley Avenue. A total of 46 members of HGC had 70 woven pieces accepted into this year's presentation, which is on view until April 28.

Among those represented is Ms Roehrs, an expert instructor at Weaving Newtown, who won ribbons for both of her entries. She received a first place ribbon - handwoven, of course - in Home Decor for her "Zesty Zebra" echo weave pillow.

She received a second ribbon, the Hand Spun Award, and a cash prize for her large shawl, called "Handspun Hug," created with her own handspun yarn.

In addition, Weaving Newtown volunteer Christine Wilkinson of Southbury won a first place ribbon for "Silk Road," a large wall hanging.

Jane Phillips of Newtown, who is also part of the Weaving Newtown group, had a blanket woven from the fleece of her alpacas accepted into the show as well. "Mullingars Mission" features a black and white diamond pattern.

Founded in 1948, The Handweavers' Guild of Connecticut invites handweavers, spinners, and other fiber artists from all levels of experience to exchange ideas and share knowledge, to encourage and educate, to stimulate creativity and to challenge their abilities in fiber art technique.

Gallery hours for "Weavers' Heaven" are Monday and Wednesday through Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm; and Sunday, noon to 5 pm. Admission is free and open to the public.

Demonstration Day, led by Fairfield County's Area 3 weavers, will take place on Saturday, April 8, from 11 am to 3 pm.
