The fifth annual Sandy Hook 5K road race will take place on Saturday, April 1. Following kids runs beginning at 9 am, the 5K will begin at 9:45 am on the campus of Fairfield Hills.5krunforshf.org.

According to a March 31 release from Newtown Police Department, traffic within Fairfield Hills will be closed from 8 to 10 am.

Police additionally announce that  Mile Hill Road South and Nunnawauk Road will also be closed during the event.

According to the race website, runners and walkers will be starting from Keating Farms Avenue, next to the  Newtown Municipal Center.

They will follow Keating Farms Avenue out to Mile Hill South, then Nunnawauk Road to just north of the driveway for Garner CI. Participants will turn around at that point and follow the same roads back to the finish line in front of the municipal center.

Shuttles to and from the race will operate from designated parking locations, including Newtown High School, beginning at 7:30 am. Newtown Police will have officers on duty to direct traffic.

There are more than 2,200 participants signed up for the event, and participation registration is closed. Volunteers can still sign up to help, and spectators are also welcome.

The Newtown Memorial Fund will again serve as the fiduciary to collect and process all donations. Proceeds from the Sandy Hook 5K will be donated to the Collaborative Recovery Fund administered by The Newtown-Sandy Hook Community Foundation, which pays the out-of-pocket mental health expenses for those eligible who have been most impacted by 12/14.

Additionally, a percentage of the proceeds will go directly to the chosen nonprofit organizations of the 26 families who lost loved ones in the tragedy.

Sandy Hook 5K organizers are one again looking for a youth's-eye-view of what Newtown and the theme "Love Runs Through" means to them. Children ages 2-10 are invited to enter a logo design contest, with first prize being a gift certificate to The Toy Tree and the honor of seeing their design on 200 T-shirts on April 1.
