ON THE ROAD FOR MAY 2
NO DOUBT about it, the Meadows Music Theatre is starting to fill its listing
with concerts for the summer. Last week's announcements (tickets are already
on sale for these) included the first outdoor show of the season, with THE
INDIGO GIRLS, whose new album is in stores this week, on May 31; THE 3G TOUR,
with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, along with opener
Robert Fripp, on June 19 (note the fact this is an early, 7:30 pm start);
LYNYRD SKYNYRD's summer tour, this year with Paul Rodgers and Corey Stevens,
on June 29 (a 7 pm start); and SANTANA's "Embrace You Absoluteness" Tour, with
opener Rusted Root, on July 20.
The G3 tour started with ERIC JOHNSON on the bill. If you had your heart set
on seeing Johnson, don't fret: He may no longer be on the G3 bill, but that's
because he is on the road on his own now. In fact, he has his own show at the
Webster Theatre in Hartford already set up, on Friday, May 16. Those tickets
are on sale now as well.
So anyway, segueing back to my original train of thought, another show for the
Meadows is going on sale this weekend. Ol' Gwen and the boys (a/k/a/ No Doubt)
will be at the Meadows on Friday, July 11, for an 8 pm show. Surprisingly,
this is not (yet?) being billed as an all-ages show. Tickets will be on sale
as of Saturday morning, 10 am, through Strawberries and Pro-Tix outlets.
The best place to see FOXY BROWN and DE LA SOUL? That would be at the open-air
venue of the Charles Ives Center, at WestConn's westside campus. Brown will
perform with De La Soul for this year's WestFest event, taking place Saturday,
May 10.
Tickets are $18 each ($12 for WestConn students). Gates will open at noon for
the event. No alcohol or open containers will be permitted.
If you aren't too busy the last week this month - I don't know, maybe take an
extended Memorial Day weekend or something - Christie's in London is going to
be selling 20th Century pictures, drawings and sculpture from the collection
of ERIC CLAPTON. A well-meaning co-worker brought this to my attention, but I
think I'll pass.
Anyway, the collection to be sold covers a real cross-section of styles and
media, stuff like works by European masters Degas, Severini and Matisse, to
English artist Bridget Riley (Optical Art movement), and modern drawings by
Degas and Utrillo. In all, the sale is estimated to bring $485/815,000.
Until next week, I'll be seeing you... on the road.
