Early March is a good time for pruning fruit trees, said board certified master arborist Dan Dalton. The Newtown resident is encouraging others to grab their pruners and join a hands-on workshop that he will be leading at The Victory Garden at Fairfield Hills, where nearly 30 donated dwarf trees grow.

Mr Dalton will show participants how best to prune trees with the goal: "We want them baring a lot of fruit," he said. Much of the work involves cleaning up the trees and "working on structure."

Join him on Saturdays, March 5, at 10 am, at the community garden located along Mile Hill Road South (between Wasserman Way and Keating Farms Avenue).

The session of discussion and instruction should run roughly one hour. There is no charge, and experience is not necessary.

Participants should bring pruning hand clippers, however, Bypass-style pruners are suggested, not anvil-style pruners.

Run by volunteers, the garden's produce supports Newtown's food pantries.
