The Garden Club of Newtown will hold its annual Greens Sale on Saturday, December 2, from 9 am to 2 pm — or until its inventory sells out — at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street.

Members of the garden club begin planning for the sale early, drying plant material from their gardens as well as citrus fruits to use in decorating wreaths, swags and table arrangements for the holiday season. Holly and other fresh greens from members will also be incorporated into the designs. Roping and kissing balls and other handmade items will be available for sale.

Newtown garden author Sydney Eddison's latest project, The Gardener's Color Wheel, will be offered during the sale. Mrs Eddison developed the color wheel and booklet as a short course in colors for the garden to combine with her book The Gardener's Palette, which was published in 2003.

A color wheel was used in the book to illustrate the color principles involved in choosing colors for the garden and the owner of The Color Wheel Company then approached her with the idea of creating a special color wheel for gardeners.

Her latest book, Gardens to Go: Creating and Designing Container Gardens (April 2005), will also be available for sale and Mrs Eddison will sign books and color wheels between 10 am and 1 pm.

Mrs Eddison's earlier books include A Patchwork Garden: Unexpected Pleasures from a Country Garden (1992), A Passion for Daylilies: The Flowers and the People (1993), The Unsung Season: Gardens and Gardeners in Winter (1995) and The Self-Taught Gardener: Lessons From A Country Garden (1997).

She was recently honored with a medal from The Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut.

A portion of the sales of Mrs Eddison's books will benefit the garden club, as will all proceeds from the garden club's items during the annual event. The garden club annually funds a scholarship through Newtown Scholarship Association. It also donates to civic projects such as the library and dog pound, and maintains the gardens at Matthew Curtiss House and the VFW's Blue Star Memorial Marker.
