The US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and town police have scheduled a prescription drug collection project for 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, October 22, at the police station, 3 Main Street (Route 25).

The program will allow residents to safely dispose of unwanted prescription medications and thus prevent possible pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted drugs, according to police.

Only pills and medication patches will be accepted. Liquids, needles, and sharps will not be accepted. The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked, police said.

Medicines that languish in home medicine cabinets are subject to possible diversion, misuse, and abuse, according to police.

It will be the 12th time in six years that the DEA has come to the Newtown Police Department for such a collection project.

Notably, the police station lobby has a secure prescription drug disposal bin, where the public may dispose of drugs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
