Evading Responsibility

At about 9 pm on September 10, an unknown motorist, who was driving a vehicle eastward on Riverside Road, drove off the right side of the street and then struck a curbside mailbox and a wooden bench near Riverside Road's intersection with Philo Curtis Road, police said.

The driver continued traveling eastward, leaving the scene without stopping to report the incident, thus evading responsibility, police said.

Police ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact them at the police station.

DUI Charge

Police said they received a report about 11 pm on September 11 that a motorist was driving erratically northward on South Main Street, so they went to the area to investigate.

Police report they found the vehicle in question on Park Lane, after which they investigated and charged motorist Pedro Alves, 27, of Newtown with driving under the influence and with driving with a suspended license. After posting $100 bail, Alves was released for a September 27 court appearance, police said.

Hawleyville Crash

At about 5:30 pm on September 13 in Hawleyville, motorist Gary Houlihan, 58, of Bethel, who was driving a 2010 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck westward near 145 Mt Pleasant Road, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by westbound motorist Matthew Luczak, 34, of Newtown, who was driving a 2015 Honda Pilot SUV, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Luczak for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

DUI Incident

Police report they stopped motorist Thomas Aleksandrowicz, 21, of Newtown for driving a 2000 Mazda Protege sedan 54 miles per hour in a posted 35-mph speed zone on Currituck Road, near Signal Post Road, about 10:16 pm, on September 14.

After investigating, police charged Aleksandrowicz with driving under the influence and with traveling unreasonably fast. Police said they released him on $100 bail for a September 28 court appearance.

Key Found

Police report that on September 14, a person turned over to them for safekeeping a key for a Jeep-brand auto that was attached to a Chrysler-brand key fob. Police said that they key had been found at the thrift shop at Newtown Congregational Church at 14 West Street. The key's owner may contact police Officer John McCluskey at the police station to claim the key.

South Main Burglary

Police report they received a burglary alarm from a business at 109 South Main Street about 5:30 am on September 15, so they went there to investigate.

Police said they found signs of a forced entry at the building, but found no suspects there. Several bags of clothing and some pieces of jewelry were later reported to be missing from the premises, police said.

Police are investigating the burglary/larceny and ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact investigating Officer William Crone at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203 426-5841.

Buick Collision

At about 7 am on September 15, on eastbound Interstate 84, motorist Cameron Champagne, 17, of Newtown, who was driving a 1992 Buick Regal, was temporarily blinded by sun glare and then struck an object, which either was some guardrailing or was the vehicle in front of him, state police said. There were no injuries.

If the vehicle that was traveling in front of Champagne was struck, its driver continued traveling onward, state police said. No motorist has reported being struck by the Buick, state police added.

Mt Pleasant Road Accident

Police report a two-vehicle accident near 70 Mt Pleasant Road at about 8:23 am on September 15.

The collision involved a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan minivan driven by David Petrini, 36, of Newtown, and a 2012 International truck driven by Scott Hiller, 28, of Ridgefield, police said.

Petrini was transported by the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Danbury Hospital on a report of pain, police said. No enforcement action was taken, police said.

Accident At Four-Way Intersection

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the four-way intersection of Hattertown Road, Poverty Hollow Road, and Key Rock Road about 8:38 pm on September 15, according to police. Each of the four legs of that intersection is controlled by a stop sign.

Police said that motorist Bonnie McCallum, 65, of Newtown, who was driving a 2015 Ford Explorer SUV, struck a 2001 Mazda Miata roadster driven by Christopher Allan, 61, of Southbury.

There were no injuries. Police said McCallum received an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

Toyota vs Subaru

At about 8 am on September 16, motorist Matthew Brown, 41, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla westward on Interstate 84, west of Exit 9, struck the rear end of a westbound 2013 Subaru Legacy driven by Lyana Ramirez, 28, of Waterbury, state police report.

Ramirez reported pain, but refuse medical attention, state police said. Brown was following too closely, according to state police.

Truck vs Truck

At about 10:26 am on September 16, on westbound Interstate 84, east of the Exit 9 interchange, trucker Mark Steven, 29, of East Hartford, who was driving a 2014 Freightliner truck, attempted to merge, but struck a 1995 Peterbilt truck driven by David Tuttle, 57, of Waymart, Penn., state police said.

There were no injuries. State police said Steven failed to drive in the established lane.

Two Charged Following Traffic Stop

Police report that they charged both the driver and a passenger of an SUV that they had stopped in Sandy Hook for an investigation at about 6:30 pm on September 16.

Police said they had spotted a Dodge Durango traveling at high speed, without functioning brake lamps, on northbound Toddy Hill Road, after which they stopped it near the intersection of Berkshire Road and Wasserman Way.

Police report they charged motorist Richard Dinicola, 43, of Waterbury, with driving with a suspended license and with failure to have functioning brake lamps. Police said that passenger Christopher Lyons, 32, of Waterbury owned the Dodge, adding that they charged Lyons with misuse of marker plates and with failure to have automotive insurance.

Both men were released for September 29 court appearances, police said.

Sticks And Stones Farm Sculptures Damaged

Police report that sometime between 11:30 pm on Saturday, September 17, and 9:30 am on Sunday, September 18, someone damaged several stone sculptures at Sticks and Stones Farm on Huntingtown Road, near the Monroe town line.

Police are investigating the vandalism and ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact them at the police station at 203 426-5841.

Ford Rollover

State police report that motorist Santiago Montoya, 21, of Brookfield was driving a 2007 Ford 500 sedan westward on Interstate 84, near Exit 9, about 1:06 am on September 18, when Montoya started to fall asleep at the wheel.

Montoya then swerved in order to avoid striking another vehicle, but Montoya had overcorrected and then struck some guardrailing on the median, after which the Ford rolled over, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police issued Montoya an infraction for failure to maintain the travel lane.

Nissan Into Rails

State police report that motorist Leroy Misir, 30, of Waterbury who was driving a 2011 Nissan Maxima sedan westward on Interstate 84, about 1,500 feet west of Exit 9, at about 4 am on September 18, told them that another driver had cut him off, after which the Nissan entered the right road shoulder and struck some guardcabling.

There were no injuries. State police issued Misir an infraction for failure to maintain the travel lane and for driving an unregistered vehicle.

DUI Charge

Police said they received a report about 12:08 am on September 21 that a vehicle was being driven erratically near the intersection of Berkshire Road and Oakview Road, so they went to the area to investigate.

Police said they found the vehicle in question, stopped it, and investigated, charging motorist Thomas Williams, 35, of Newtown, with driving under the influence and with failure to drive to the right in a construction zone.

After processing, police released Williams on $100 bail for an October 7 court appearance.
