Navy Deserter

Newtown police said they were dispatched at 12:01 am on June 28 to the area of eastbound Interstate 84's Exit 9 off-ramp in connection with a motor vehicle accident that had occurred in Danbury.

Newtown police said they learned that four people who were in the vehicle that caused the accident had run off into the woods near Exit 9. State police brought a dog to the scene to search for those four people and found them.

One of the four people apprehended, Jordan Thomas, 19, of Danbury, was the subject of a pending full extradition warrant by the US Navy for desertion. Newtown police arrested Thomas through that extradition warrant and also charged him with interfering with police. Thomas was held on $500,000 bail for an arraignment later that day in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury.

Warrant Served

Police said they traveled to the New Haven residence of Deamond Williams, 35, on the evening of June 25 to serve an arrest warrant against him on a charge of disorderly conduct stemming from an incident that occurred in Newtown in 2017. Police then brought Williams to Newtown for arrest processing, after which he was released on $500 bail for a July 17 arraignment on the charge in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury.

Warrant For Failure To Respond

Police report they performed a traffic stop on a motorist at about 8:55 am on June 24 near 151 South Main Street after observing a traffic violation and believing that the driver had a warrant pending against him.

After investigating, police served that warrant on a charge of failure to respond to an infraction against motorist Sazo Ajdinoski, 46, of Newtown. The issuance of that warrant stemmed from Ajdinoski not responding to an infraction ticket that he received in the past. Ajdinoki was released on $211 bail for a July 10 court appearance.

DUI/Crash

Police report that motorist Bronson Harper, 36, of Southbury, who was driving as a 2004 Saturn Vue SUV westward on Greenbriar Lane about 5:27 pm on June 24, swerved to avoid striking a squirrel, but then drove off the road's right shoulder and struck a curbside residential mailbox at 9 Greenbriar Lane.

The Saturn crossed over a driveway there and then struck a utility pole, bringing down the pole and some wiring onto the roadway.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters responded to the scene. Harper reported soreness but refused medical treatment, police said. The incident resulted in a road closure.

Police charged Harper with driving under the influence and with making an improper turn. Harper was released on $100 bail for a July 12 court arraignment.

DUI Incident

About 11:33 pm on June 24, police received a call informing them of erratic driving occurring in the area near the intersection of Dodgingtown Road and Shelly Road, so they investigated the report.

Police located the vehicle in question and then stopped it near 153 Sugar Street, after which they investigated and charged motorist Edison D. Quito Quezada, 27, of Carmel, N.Y., with driving under the influence and with failure to drive to the right.

After processing, police released Quito on $500 bail for a July 12 arraignment in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury.

Kayak Found

On June 24, a kayak was found at the inlet of Lake Lillinonah located near the intersection of Hanover Road and Pond Brook Road, according to police. That area is near the state boat launch.

Police ask the kayak's owner to identify the vessel and claim it. The police are holding the kayak for safekeeping at the police station at 3 Main Street; 203-426-5841.

DUI Charge

At about 8:54 pm on June 23, police received a call reporting an erratic motorist traveling on Berkshire Road near its intersection with Nighthawk Lane, so they responded to investigate.

Police found the vehicle in question near the intersection of Berkshire Road and Wasserman Way, after which they stopped it to investigate. Police charged motorist Mikaelle Alvarez, 39, of Danbury, with driving under the influence, failure to drive in the proper lane, and driving without a license. Alvarez is scheduled to appear in court July 10 to answer the charges.

DUI Arrest

About 9:13 pm on June 23, police received a report concerning a silver-colored Ford F-250 pickup truck being driven erratically on South Main Street, near Pecks Lane. Police found the vehicle in question and watched it drive erratically northward on South Main Street, after which they stopped it to investigate.

Police report they charged motorist James Barrett, 60, of Danbury with driving under the influence and with making an improper turn. After arrest processing, Barrett was released on $100 bail for a July 8 court appearance.

Intersection Crash

At about 2:04 pm on June 22, motorist Mary Chirichella, 73, of Middlebury, who was driving a 2018 Toyota RAV-4 SUV westward on Sugar Street, slowed in preparing to make a left turn onto southbound Boggs Hill Road, after which westbound motorist Matthew Hurley, 32, of Trumbull, who was driving a 2015 GMNC Canyon pickup truck, struck the rear end of the Toyota, police said,

There were no injuries. Hurley received an infraction for following too closely.

Sideswipe

State police report that a sideswipe collision occurred on eastbound Interstate 84, near Exit 10, about 9:56 pm on June 22.

In that incident, motorist Gregory Jackson, 63, of Beverly Hills, Calif., who was driving a 1991 Acura Integra sedan, was involved in a sideswipe with motorist Johnny Stafford, 42, of Lancaster, Penn., who was driving a 2018 International truck.

Fault in the accident could not be determined. Those involved in the accident provided conflicting versions of what had occurred, according to state police. There were no injuries. State police took no enforcement.

Sedan vs SUV

State police said motorist Loretta Fox, 55 of Wethersfield, who was driving a 2016 Honda CR-V SUV westward on Interstate 84, near Exit 10, at about 7:35 am on June 21, slowed for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Chad Campbell, 21, of Wolcott, who was driving a 2008 Chrysler Aspen sedan.

There were no injuries. Campbell was verbally warned for following too closely.

Toyota vs Sign

Police report an incident in which a motorist who damaged public property left the scene of the collision and evaded responsibility.

Police learned at about 6:26 pm on June 21 that an unknown person, who was driving some type of Toyota-brand vehicle westward on Currituck Road, was negotiating a curve to the left and approaching Currituck Road's intersection with Butterfield Road when the driver braked suddenly lost control of the vehicle, traveled off the right road shoulder and then struck the street-name sign for Butterfield Road, knocking the signpost to the ground.

The driver then reversed gear and drove away from the scene, thus evading responsibility. Police Officer Bart Lorancaitis is investigating.

Rock Off Truck

At about 8 am on June 19, on eastbound Interstate 84, about one-half mile west of Exit 11, a rock fell off the bed of a 2000 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Manuel Chacon, 47, of Danbury, after which that rock struck the windshield of a 2010 Subaru Legacy driven by Amanda Bonacci, 29, of Danbury, state police said.

There were no injuries. Enforcement information was not available.

State Police Warrant

Newtown police report they observed a white 1997 Ford Ranger pickup truck traveling southward on Main Street about 6 pm on June 19, and learned that state police held a pending arrest warrant for the vehicle's owner - Alexander Chavez, 25, of Oxford.

Newtown police stopped the truck near 55 Church Hill Road, confirmed that the driver was the vehicle's owner, and took him into custody for transfer to the state police. Also, Newtown police issued motorist Chavez an infraction for possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana.

Truck Hits Guardrail

At about 9:15 pm on June 16, motorist Mitchell Carroll, 25, of Ridgefield, who was driving a 2015 Dodge Ram truck on westbound Interstate 84, struck some metal-beam guardrailing along the highway, state police report.

There were no injuries. State police issued Carroll an infraction for a moving violation.

Interstate Contact

State police report that motorist Donovan Mam, 23, of Naugatuck, who was driving a 2012 Audi A-4 sedan eastward on Interstate 84, about one mile west of Exit 10, about 9:16 pm on June 19, slowed for construction traffic and was then struck from behind by motorist Daniel Fore, 18, of Newtown, who was driving a 2010 Subaru Impreza sedan.

There were no injuries. Fore received a warning for following too closely.

Highway Collision

At about 5:27 pm on June 2, motorist Janet Mitchell, 54, of Plymouth, who was driving a 2016 Subaru Legacy sedan eastward on Interstate 84, near Exit 11, stopped amid heavy traffic conditions, after which the Subaru was struck from behind by a 2012 Chevrolet Express G-2500 van driven by Keith Sziabowski, 29, of New Britain, state police said. There were no injuries. State police verbally warned Sziabowski for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
