Three Car Crash

State Troopers were called to the area of Exit 9 on Interstate 84 westbound at about 8:42 am on September 12 after a reported multi car crash. Upon investigation, it was determined that Nicole K. Muthersbaugh, 26, of Monroe, was operating a 2016 Acura llx when she failed to slow for stopped traffic. The Acura then struck the rear of a 2004 Honda CR-V being operated by Stephen Toth, 47, of Naugatuck, and pushing the Honda into the rear of a 2017 Ford F150 pickup truck being operated by Joseph C. Cole, 45, of Wolcott.

No injuries were reported and the Acura and Honda sustained damages to the extent they had to be towed from the scene. Muthersbaugh was subsequently issued an infraction ticket for failure to maintain a safe distance apart.

Found Phone

On September 11 at about 6:30 pm, Newtown Police say a Samsung ZTE mobile phone was found on the ground at the Citgo station on Church Hill Road.

The individual who lost it may claim it at the Newtown Police headquarters.

Evading Vehicle Sought

Newtown Police are seeking the public's help identifying the operator of a dark-colored, lifted pickup truck that struck the rear of another vehicle at the intersection of Hawleyville and Mt Pleasant Roads around 5:31 pm on September 10.

Police say the operator of a Ford T-150 truck owned by Charter Communications was traveling south on Hawleyville Road when it was stopped waiting to turn left on a red traffic signal, when the dark-color pickup attempted to pass on the right, striking the Ford's right rear end causing damage to a tail light and rear quarter panel.

Any witnesses are asked to contact Officer Wickman at 203-426-5841.

DUI After Crash

Newtown officers responded to the area of Boggs Hill and Mt Nebo Roads around 3 am on September 9 after a reported single-vehicle crash. After a brief investigation, officers arrested Colin C. Cooper, 23, of Newtown, on the charges of operating under the influence of drugs/alcohol, and making a restricted turn. He was later released on a $100 appearance bond pending a September 26 court

Intersection Collision

On September 9 at about 5:10 pm, police and volunteer ambulance personnel responded to a reported two-vehicle collision at Church Hill Road and The Boulevard. Upon investigating, police state that Jordan K. Jones, 31, of Chaumont, N.Y., was operating a 2011 Honda Insight exiting the private driveway at 32 Church Hill Road and turning onto the roadway when it struck a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo being operated by Elsa Cassidy, 40, of Ridgefield, who was traveling eastbound with a green light at the intersection.

A passenger in the Jeep was examined by EMS and transported to a local hospital for an evaluation. Jones was issued an infraction for failure to grant the right of way at a private driveway.

Head-On Crash

Police and emergency responders converged on the area of Mt Pleasant Road and Old Bethel Road around 5:34 pm on September 9 following a reported two-car collision. Upon arrival, police say that Kelsey J. Rocca, 30, of Newtown, was operating a 2011 Subaru Impreza east on Mt Pleasant Road, when the vehicle crossed the double yellow line into the westbound lane, striking a 2016 Mazda CX-5 being operated by Stephanie R. Whitlock of Bethel. Police report that the impact caused the Subaru to continue across the westbound travel lane and striking a tree.

Both operators were evaluated at the scene and transported to a local hospital with related injuries. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. Rocca was issued an infraction for failure to drive right.

Vehicle Towed

On September 8 at about 3:26 pm, Troopers were called to investigate a reported crash on eastbound Interstate 84 near the Exit 9 off ramp. Upon arrival and investigation, it was reported that JohnScott Putnam, 55, of Burlington, was operating a 2016 RAM 1500 truck when he stopped for traffic and was struck from behind by a 2017 Subaru Forester being operated by Lee M. Blumkin, 29, of Danbury.

The Subaru was damaged to the extent it had to be towed, but no injuries were reported. Blumkin was issued an infraction ticket for failure to maintain established distance.

Warrant Arrest

On September 7 at about 1:05 am, Christopher M. Szczesiul, 24, of Woodbury, was arrested by members of the Newtown Police Department at his residence on a warrant service. He was transported to the Newtown Police Department and charged with two counts of violation of a protective order given a court date of September 8, and was released on a $100 cash bond.

Rear Ender

At about 8:34 am on September 7, Jemelia T. Joseph, 24, of the Bronx, N.Y., was operating a 2000 Acura TL westbound on Interstate 84 in the area of Exit 10, when Troopers say he failed to avoid a 2016 Hyundai Sonata being operated by Alyssa Boyd, 25, of Waterbury, who had slowed for stopped traffic.

No injuries occurred and both vehicles were drivable. Joseph was issued an infraction ticket for failure to maintain a safe distance apart.

Unsafe Lane Change

State Police responded to the area of Interstate 84 eastbound Exit 11 at around 5:50 pm on September 7 after a reported two-car collision. Upon arrival, Troopers determined that Maria Martins, 58, of Naugatuck, operating a 2008 Mazda 6i, had merged from the on ramp into the path of a 2009 Peterbilt commercial truck being operated by Larry G. Manson, 69, of Brockton, Mass., causing a minor collision.

No injuries occurred and both vehicles were drivable. Martins was issued an infraction for making an unsafe lane change.

Rear-Ender

About 4:26 pm on September 6, motorist Donald Rossi, 37, of Ridgefield, who was driving a 2014 Subaru Outback, stopped in traffic on Berkshire Road, near Wasserman Way, and was then struck from behind by motorist Charles Baker, 54, of Danbury, who was driving a 2005 Dodge Stratus, police report.

Neither driver requested medical attention, police said. Police report they issued Baker an infraction for following too closely and for driving an unregistered vehicle.

Four-Way Stop

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the four-way intersection of Key Rock Road, Hattertown Road, and Poverty Hollow Road about 5:06 pm on September 6. Each leg of that intersection is controlled by a stop sign.

The accident involved motorist Gasner Demosthenes, 39, of Monroe, who was driving a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder SUV, and motorist Virginia Clyne, 65, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2016 Ford Explorer SUV, police said. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Demosthenes to the hospital for an evaluation of pain, police said. Clyne reported pain, but refused transport, police said.

Dodgingtown volunteer firefighters went to the accident. Police said they issued Demosthenes an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

Church Hill Accident

A two-vehicle accident occurred on westbound Church Hill Road, just east of its intersection with Walnut Tree Hill Road, about 8:45 am on September 5.

Motorist Lillian Gustilo, 53, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan minivan westward, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Mohamed Elsafty, 38, of Newtown, who was driving a 2002 Volkswagen Passat. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Elsafty a written warning for following too closely.

Motorcycle Theft

Police report that sometime between 9:45 and 11 am on September 4, a black and orange Kawasaki ZX-14-R motorcycle with a Vermont marker plate, which was parked in the parking lot at Liberty Field at 32 Elm Drive, was stolen. Police are investigating the theft and ask anyone with information on the incident to contact them at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Shoplifting

Update: All charges in this incident were dismissed in Danbury Superior Court, January 17, 2018.

Police report that at about 2:40 pm on September 4, they received a call from the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street about a shoplifting incident that had allegedly occurred, so police responded to investigate.

After investigating the matter, police charged Lori Iwanicki, 32, of Sandy Hook with sixth-degree larceny. Police released her on a written promise to appear on September 20 in state Superior Court in Danbury.

Drug Charges

About 8:50 pm on September 4, police received a complaint from a business on Church Hill Road concerning suspicious activity, after which they responded to investigate.

Police said they charged Philip Conboy, 56, of Southbury with possession of narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia, and sixth-degree larceny. After arrest processing, police released Conboy on $500 bail for a September 19 appearance in state Superior Court in Danbury.

Arrested After Theft

On September 4 at about 8:50 pm, Newtown officers responded to the Wheels gas station and minimart at 67 Church Hill Road following a reported larceny. After reviewing surveillance video, officers observed a suspect vehicle involved traveling on Queen Street and conducted a motor vehicle stop.

After investigation, officers report cocaine was found in the vehicle, and the suspect, Philip A. Conboy, 56, of Southbury was arrested and charged with larceny in the sixth degree, possession of narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia, and was subsequently released on a $500 surety bond pending a September 19 court date.

Rear-End Collision

On September 4 at about 12:14 pm, police responded to a reported two vehicle crash in the area of 86 Berkshire Road. Upon arrival and investigation, officers report that James Alexander Street, 17, of Sandy Hook, was operating a 2004 Acura MDX eastbound when he failed to stop for a 2012 Honda Accord being operated by Jacqueline Maureen Seras, 17, of Sandy Hook that was stopped with a signal on waiting to turn into a private driveway. The collision forced the Honda to spin and hit a tree on the side of the roadway.

Both operators were evaluated and released by volunteer ambulance personnel, and both vehicles were towed from the scene. Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue also responded. Street was issued an infraction for following too close.

Unsafe Backing

Police say that at about 11:12 am on September 4, Tonio Manilo Visca, 56, of Milford was operating a 2012 Honda Civic southbound on Wendover Road approaching Church Hill Road in front of a 2008 Dodge Avenger being operated by Heidi Gendron, 41, of Southbury. When Visca was directed to proceed forward and turn around by a traffic agent, police say he instead backed up into the Dodge. He was issued a verbal warning for unsafe backing.

Cadillac Into Ditch

Newtown officers were called to the area of Swamp Road near the intersection of South Main Street at about 1:33 am on September 3 after a reported single-vehicle crash. Upon arrival officers discovered a 2005 Cadillac Escalade had been traveling eastbound when it struck a utility pole on the eastbound shoulder, continuing on before exiting the roadway and becoming stuck in a ditch.

Police say the operator, identified in the report as James D. Walsh, 26, of Sandy Hook, was not on scene when officers arrived. The vehicle was towed from the scene. Police say an investigation is continuing.

Truck Into Trestle

Newtown police say that after turning from South Main Street at about 12:21 pm on September 2, and apparently failing to see or note two state traffic control signs warning of a restricted height bridge on Botsford Hill Road, Edward Brandt III of Wolcott drove an oversized Penske rental box truck into the railroad trestle on that roadway. No damage to the bridge was noted by responding officers. The driver was issued a written warning for failure to obey a state traffic control sign.

Underhill Road

About 6:15 pm on August 31, motorist Jeffrey Martin, 58, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan minivan, was backing out of a driveway on Underhill Road, as motorist Elizabeth Mouchantat, 23, of Sandy Hook, was driving a 2013 Subaru Outback station wagon westward on Underhill Road, police report. The two vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Police gave Martin a written warning for unsafe backing.

Warrant

Police said they arrested William Bero, 25, of Fairfield on a warrant on the morning of August 31, charging him with second-degree failure to appear in court.

Police said Bero was initially charged in April 2011 with failure to have operating headlamps and with driving under suspension. Police held Bero on $75 bail for an August 31 arraignment in state Superior Court in Danbury.

Four Charges

Police report that on the evening of August 30, they arrested Katherine Sullivan, 52, of Sandy Hook, on warrants, charging her with four counts of violation of probation/conditional discharge. After arrest processing, Sullivan posted $17,500 bail on the charges and was released for September 13 and September 14 court appearances.

Nissan Vs Trees

Police report that motorist Elleen Brewer, 80, of Ansonia was driving a 1998 Nissan Altima westward on Berkshire Road, near Zoar Road, about 9:40 pm on August 28, when while negotiating a left curve in the roadway, the Nissan drove off the right road shoulder and struck and knocked over a small tree, after which the auto

struck a large tree in the front yard at 109 Berkshire Road.

Police said they verbally warned Brewer for making a restricted turn. Brewer was transported to Danbury Hospital for an evaluation. Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue also responded to the accident.

Botsford Crash

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of South Main Street and Swamp Road about 9:16 pm on August 27.

In that incident, motorist Equan Brooks, 22, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2011 BMW 328-XI auto, was attempting to exit Swamp Road and enter South Main Street, as motorist Patrick Coletti, 80, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2003 Audi A-4 auto, was heading northward on South Main Street. The two autos collided.

Police said Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps went to the scene and checked the drivers of the BMW and the Audi, plus a passenger in the Audi, but all three people refused medical attention. Botsford Fire Rescue volunteer members went to the accident. Police issued Brooks an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign and for driving an unregistered vehicle.

South Main DUI

Police received a call about 8:57 pm on August 27, reporting that a motorist was driving erratically on South Main Street, near its intersection with Orchard Hill Road, so they responded in seeking to find the motorist in question.

Police pulled over motorist Annmarie Solaz, 59, of Southbury about 9 pm near 45 South Main Street to investigate. They charged Solaz with driving under the influence. After arrest processing, police released Solaz on $100 bail for a September 12 court appearance.

Hawleyville Ramp Crash

State police report a two-vehicle accident on eastbound Interstate 84's Exit 9 off-ramp about 4:12 pm on August 26.

In that incident, motorist Suzanne Frennesson, 50, of Naugatuck, who was driving a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan minivan, halted for some stopped traffic and was then struck from behind by motorist Lewis Han, 29, of Jersey City, N.J., who was driving a Chevrolet vehicle. There were no injuries. State police verbally warned Han for following too closely.

VW Vs Stop Sign

Police said that on the night of August 26, motorist Maria Matos, 59, of Danbury, who was driving a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta, drove off the road near the intersection of Taunton Hill Road and Birch Hill Road, damaging a stop sign and a street-name sign. After a flat tire was changed on the Volkswagen, it continued traveling onward without Matos notifying police about the crash.

Police said they found the Volkswagen to be disabled in Bethel and investigated the Newtown incident, after which they charged Matos with evading responsibility and with making a restricted turn. Matos is scheduled to appear in court on September 12 to answer the charges.

DUI Arrest

Police report that at about 12:27 am on August 25, they spotted a vehicle traveling erratically while southward on South Main Street, near Sand Hill Plaza. The vehicle was crossing over the road's center lines and then made an illegal U-turn.

Police said they then stopped motorist Roch Finnegan, 22, of Fairfield to investigate, after which they charged him with driving under the influence, failure to drive to the right, and making a restricted turn. After arrest processing, police released Finnegan on $100 bail for a September 12 court appearance.

Four-Way Stop

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the four-way-stop intersection of Hattertown Road, Poverty Hollow Road, and Key Rock Road about 8:36 am on August 25.

The collision involved motorist Victor Lopezromero, 49, of Spring Valley, N.Y., who was driving a 1997 Ford Escort, and motorist Carlos Uruchima-Cujilan, 28, of Waterbury, who was driving a 2002 Ford Focus.

There were no injuries. Police issued Lopezromero an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

DUI Incident

At about 10:18 am on August 25, police received a call informing them that a possibly intoxicated male motorist had driven into a commercial parking lot at 52 Church Hill Road, so they went there to investigate.

After investigating, police charged motorist Thomas Debacco, 54, of Oxford with driving under the influence. After posting $500 bail, police released Debacco for a September 8 arraignment on the charge in state Superior Court in Danbury.

Church Hill Accident

Police said that at about 11:55 am on August 25, motorist Jeannette Quintin, 70, of Ridgewood, N.J., was driving a 2015 Toyota RAV-4 SUV westward on Church Hill Road in a straight-ahead lane, as motorist Joseph Bell, 31, of Norwalk was driving a 2005 Ford Econoline van westward in a left-turn lane.

The Toyota then attempted to make a left turn in attempting to enter the Newtown Mobil gas station at 62 Church Hill Road, but as the Toyota attempted that maneuver, the two vehicles collided. There were no significant injuries, police said. Police report they verbally warned Quintin for making a restricted turn.

Across The Highway

At about 12:50 pm on August 25, motorist Nertia Pitargue, 60, of Barryville, N.Y., was driving a 2017 Volkswagen Passat in the left lane on eastbound Interstate 84, as tractor-trailer truck driver Carlos Arias, 39, of Piscataway, N.J., was driving a 21013 Freightliner westward, state police said.

A tire then fell off a wheel on the Freightliner's trailer and rolled across the highway median, striking the Volkswagen. The truck caused the accident, but because the tire was defective state police said they took no enforcement action. Pitargue reported a hand injury, but refused medical attention.

Mazda Vs Ford

State police said that motorist Mark Carey, 50, of Wilkes-Barre, Penn., who was driving a 2015 Ford SUV eastward on Interstate 84, about 2,500 feet west of Exit 9, at about 6:10 pm on August 25, slowed for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Ryan Wright, 41, of New Haven, who was driving a 197 Mazda 626 auto. State police issued Wright an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Interstate Accident

At about 7:17 pm on August 25 on eastbound Interstate 84, about 2,500 feet west of Exit 11, traffic on the highway slowed and motorist Jacob Willis, 17, of Woodbury, who was driving a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, struck the rear end of a 2010 BMW X-5 SUV driven by Lee Richards, 67, of Greenwich, state police said.

There were no injuries. Willis received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Greenbriar Crash

Police report that at about 11 pm on August 24, motorist Nicholas Hall, 18, of Newtown was driving a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan minivan westward on Greenbriar Lane, near Southbrook Lane, when while taking a left curve in the roadway, the vehicle hit the curbing along the right road shoulder, after which it traveled off the right side of the street and then struck a large tree.

There were no injuries. Police issued Hall an infraction for making a restricted turn.

SUV Vs SUV

At about 7:43 pm on August 24, on eastbound Interstate 84, motorist Byron Boyle, 36, of Southington, who was driving a 2011 Nissan Rogue SUV, encountered slowing traffic, after which the Nissan was struck from behind by motorist Francois Gauthier, 39, of Framingham, Mass., who was driving a 2011 Mazda CX-7 SUV, state police said. A passenger in the Mazda reported pain, but refused medical attention, state police said. Gauthier received an infraction for following too closely.

Interstate Collision

State police said that at about 8:25 am on August 22 on the Exit 11 off-ramp for westbound Interstate 84, motorist Robert Pawlikowski, 58, of Roxbury, who was driving a 2016 Honda Civic, slowed for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Alexa Massimin, 22, of Southbury, who was driving a 2014 Ford Fusion.

There were no injuries. State police said they verbally warned Massimin for following too closely.

Botsford Collision

About 2:44 pm on August 19, motorist Matthew Manjos, 18, of Monroe, who was driving a 2012 Jeep Wrangler SUV southward on Botsford Hill Road, stopped and was waiting for northbound traffic to clear so he could make a left turn onto eastbound High Bridge Road, when the Jeep was struck from behind by southbound motorist Rebecca Thompson, 21, of Trumbull, who was driving a 1996 Honda Accord.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Thompson an infraction for following too closely.
