Arrest Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for her arrest, Margaret Iodice, 52, of Bridgeport went to the police station about 11:45 am on June 28 and was arrested on a charge of second-degree failure to appear in court, according to police.

Police said that the pending court case against Iodice stems from a past incident in which she was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence.

After processing, police released Iodice on $1,000 bail for a July 12 appearance in state Superior Court in Danbury.

DUI Arrest

Police report they received a complaint about 9:05 pm on June 26, informing them that a person was erratically driving a green Infiniti auto in the Taunton Hill Road neighborhood, so they went there to investigate.

Police said they located the vehicle in question and stopped it, after which they investigated and charged motorist Zachary Furtado, 21, of Bethel, with driving under the influence and with possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana.

Following arrest processing, police released Furtado on $500 bail for a July 11 arraignment on the charges in state Superior Court in Danbury.

Honda Stolen

Police report that sometime between 3 pm on Saturday, June 24, and 7:39 am on Sunday, June 25, someone stole a 2011 Honda Accord auto from the driveway at 11 Maple Drive in Sandy Hook. The Honda has a North Carolina marker plates with the number AHH-4609.

Police police said the vehicle's doors had been left unlocked and that a spare key for the vehicle may have been left inside its center console. Police ask anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area to contact investigating Officer Steven Borges at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841.

Police urge that motorists remove all valuables from unattended vehicles and also keep such vehicles locked to deter theft.

Two Motorists Charged

At about 4:12 pm on June 23, in stop-and-go traffic on eastbound Interstate 84, near Exit 9, motorist Laurie Lubus-Bustamante, 51, of Danbury, who was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo coupe, struck the rear end of a 2010 Honda Insight auto driven by Noah Ullman, 45, of Colebrook, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police said Lubus-Bustmante received an infraction for following too closely. State police added that Ullman received an infraction for driving an unregistered vehicle.

BMW vs Nissan

At about 5:31 pm on June 23, motorist Robert Burkhart, 67, of Newtown, who was driving a 2004 BMW X-3 SUV southward on Currituck Road, stopped at a stop sign at its intersection with Main Street, according to police.

At that time, Jorge Portillo, 31, of Danbury was driving a 2007 Nissan UD-2300 truck northward on Main Street.

The BMW then attempted to make a left turn to enter southbound Main Street, resulting in the two vehicles colliding, police said. Burkhart, Portillo, and Nissan passenger Saul Sanchez, 28, of Danbury, all were transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Police report they verbally warned Burkhart for failure to grant the right of way.

Dodge vs Honda

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Hanover Road and Hall Lane on June 23.

The collision involved motorist Michael Sharp, 34, of Pinehurst, N.C., who was driving a 2017 Dodge Journey SUV, and motorist Sean Kearns, 37, of Newtown, who was driving a 2014 Honda Accord. There were no injuries.

Police said they verbally warned Sharp for failure to grant the right of way.

Exit 10 Off-Ramp

State police said that at about 6:52 pm on June 22, at the end of eastbound Interstate 84's Exit 10 off-ramp, motorist Mark Taylor, 64, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2009 Infiniti FX-35 SUV, struck the rear end of a 2009 BMW 328-XI auto driven by Ellen Hood, 53, of Sandy Hook.

There were no injuries. Taylor received a written warning for unsafe movement.

DUI Incident

Police said they received a report about 8:36 pm on June 20, that someone was driving a 2001 Honda Accord in Sandy Hook Center erratically, so they responded to investigate.

Police said they spotted the vehicle in question and pulled it over near 160 South Main Street. Police said they issued motorist Eli Wasoba, 40, of Newtown a misdemeanor summons on a charge of driving under the influence. Additionally, police issued Wasoba an infraction on a charge of possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana.

After he posted $500 cash bail, police released Wasoba from custody for a July 5 arraignment on the charges in state Superior Court in Danbury.

SUV Off Road

Motorist Dominic Scalzo, 16, of Newtown was driving a 2001 Jeep Cherokee SUV westward on Wasserman Way, east of its intersection with Mile Hill Road South, at about 5:56 am on June 21, when the Jeep traveled off the right road shoulder, struck a utility pole, and then hit a chain-link fence, police report.

There were no injuries. Police said that they verbally warned Scalzo for traveling too fast and for making a restricted turn.

Evading Responsibility

Police report that at about 5:18 pm on June 21, they responded to a complaint concerning a motor vehicle accident on Bonnie Brae Drive.

In that incident, motorist Jack Phelps, 18, of Newtown, driving an unspecified vehicle, backed down Bonnie Brae Road at high speed and then struck some wooden fencing, thus damaging that fencing, police said.

Phelps then left the scene of the crash before police arrived, according to police.

Following another complaint later that night about erratic driving, police said they found Phelps on Currituck Road driving the same vehicle that had been involved in the Bonnie Brae Drive collision earlier.

After investigating, in connection with the Bonnie Brae Road collision police then charged Phelps with evading responsibility and unsafe backing. Police released Phelps on $400 bail for a July 7 arraignment on the charges in state Superior Court in Danbury.

Truck vs Tree

About 9:30 am on June 20, motorist Garrett O'Connor, 28, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup truck eastward on Brennan Road, encountered a deer, which had entered the road, after which O'Connor swerved to the right avoid the animal, but instead struck a tree off the right side of the road. There were no injuries.

Police report they issued O'Connor a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Intersection Collision

A two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Park Lane and Greenbriar Lane about 11:50 am on June 20.

The crash involved motorist Samanatha Mahieu, 17, of Harwinton, who was driving a 2011 Ford Escape SUV, and motorist Kent Bonsignore, 52, of Newtown, who was driving a 2012 Ford F-350 truck, police report.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Mahieu an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.

Honda Hits Pole

Motorist Michael George, 23, of Newtown was driving a 2006 Honda Pilot SUV northward near 14 Taunton Lake Drive at about 2:54 pm on June 20, when George became inattentive as he began sneezing and also encountered approaching traffic, police report. The Honda then went off the right side of the road and struck a utility pole.

There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned George for failure to maintain the proper lane.

Six Charges

State police report they observed motorist Jairo Abreu, 25, of Danbury drifting across the lanes of westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 11, at about 10:40 pm on June 19, so they stopped the vehicle west of Exit 10 to investigate.

State police said they charged Abreu with possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, failure to drive in the proper lane, speeding (84 mph in a 65-mph zone), driving under suspension, and improper use of marker plates.

Following arrest processing, Abreu posted $1,000 bail for a July 5 court appearance.

Theft From Honda

Police report that sometime between June 13 and June 18, someone stole four tires and the wheels from a red 2001 Honda Accord auto, which was parked in the front yard at 40 South Main Street. The aluminum wheels were an Acura-brand five-spoke design.

Police ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact Officer Felicia Figol at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Walkie-Talkie Found

Police said they are holding for safekeeping a compact walkie-talkie that was found at Fairfield Hills after the Wear Orange event on National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 2. The Motorola-brand walkie-talkie has 22 channels.

The owner may claim the walkie-talkie at the police station at 3 Main Street.

Newtown Police, Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue, and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the Shady Rest neighborhood shortly after 1 pm, Monday, June 26, following a report of a one-car accident. An unidentified female driver had crashed her vehicle into some mailboxes on MacKenzie Circle, near its southern intersection with Shepaug Road. The woman was checked for injuries, and then transported to the hospital. Additional details were not available when The Bee went to press Thursday, June 29. (Sandy Hook Fire & Rescue photo)
