One That Didn’t Get Away ... 362-Pound Blue Marlin Reeled In By Newtown Fishermen

From the deep water off Montauk Harbor in Long Island, Newtown residents reeled in a 362-pound blue marlin in July. “We were way out,” said Kevin Yacko, when the spear-nosed fish bit. At nearly half the 25-foot boat’s length, hauling the fish onboard “was quite a battle,” he said. Once it took the bait, the fish tried for deeper water. Describing the struggle, he said, “Can you imagine pulling a Volkswagen up from the ocean floor?” Once they caught it and hauled it aboard, they tried to revive it, but failed. Standing onshore after reeling in the huge catch are, from left, Bethel resident Steve Hiteshew, Kevin Yacko and fellow Newtown resident Julio Segarra, and John Laporte of Milford.
