One-Day Locals During Columbus Day Weekend From Danbury Railway Museum

DANBURY — Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts, Inc (Mass Bay RRE) announces two special excursion passenger trains that will run through the brilliant fall foliage of the scenic Housatonic River Valley during Columbus Day weekend.

The Pittsfield Express will run on Saturday, October 9, from Danbury to Pittsfield, Mass., and return. The Derby Local will run on Sunday, October 10, from Danbury to Derby Junction, and return. High Iron Travel Corp will operate both special trains, using equipment from the Housatonic Railroad based in Canaan.

The Pittsfield Express will leave the restored 1903 Danbury station (the home of Danbury Railway Museum), 120 White Street, at 10:15 am. The Express will travel the scenic Berkshire Line of the Housatonic Railroad through New Milford, Canaan and Lenox, Mass., to Pittsfield, with a stop at Stockbridge, Mass.

At Pittsfield, the Express will change ends and return to Danbury about 7:15 pm.

The Pittsfield Express will be the first coach train open to the public for a through Danbury-Pittsfield trip since Penn Central Railroad ended its passenger service in April 1971.

The Derby Local will leave Danbury at 10:15 am Sunday, using the Maybrook Line of the Housatonic Railroad along the lower Housatonic River Valley to Derby Junction. There, it will also change ends and return to Danbury about 3 pm. The Pittsfield Express and The Derby Local will both connect in Danbury with Metro-North Railroad commuter trains from and to New York.

Pittsfield Express round-trip coach tickets are $79 for adults and $49 for children 12 and under. Derby Local round-trip coach tickets are $45 for adults and $29 for children. Two-day package coach fares are $109 for adults and $69 for children. A limited number of First Class seats, including all meals and beverages, are $349 for The Pittsfield Express and $129 for The Derby Local, or $449 for both days.

Coach passengers on both trips may order a box lunch in advance for $10, or bring their own picnic lunch. All passengers must sign a liability release required by the railroad.
