NVCC Offers

SAT Preparation Workshops

WATERBURY — Starting March 12, high school students taking the SAT will be faced with an entirely revamped test, and Naugatuck Valley Community College has workshops that can help get them ready for it.

Changes to the SAT, which also will be offered May 7 and June 4, include a new writing portion that requires an essay; a new section on math that includes questions from Algebra II; a longer test overall that will take three hours and 20 minutes, instead of two and a half hours.

“This year it’s even more important than before for students to take an SAT preparation course before sitting down to take the test,” said Michelle Allen, a math instructor at NVCC who is also teaching the college’s two SAT math workshops. “Students shouldn’t think they’re ready just because they took the PSAT last year.”

NVCC is offering SAT workshops in both math and verbal/critical writing. Each is a series of six, 90-minute classes.

The first “SAT Workshop: Verbal/Critical Writing” will be held from 5:30 to 7 pm Mondays and Wednesdays for three weeks starting January 31. A second verbal/critical writing workshop will be held from 5:30 to 7 pm on six consecutive Wednesdays starting March 9.

The first “SAT Workshop: Math” will be held from 7:15 to 8:45 pm Mondays and Wednesdays for three weeks starting January 31. A second math workshop will be held from 7:15 to 8:45 pm on six consecutive Wednesdays starting March 9.

The cost for either workshop is $139. For more information, call 203-575-8029 or visit www.nvcc.commnet.edu and go to page 38 in the college’s Continuing Education Non-Credit Catalog for spring 2005.

Located off Exit 18 on Interstate 84 in Waterbury, NVCC is a two-year, accredited college that offers more than 90 associate degree and credit certifications, as well as hundreds of noncredit programs, like the SAT workshop. The college serves 35 communities across western Connecticut from Litchfield to Waterbury to Seymour to Southbury and Danbury where it has a training center that offers professional certification courses, as well as English as a second language and others.
