No Tax Incentives For Multi-Unit Housing Developers

To The Editor:

I am surprised to learn that our town's Economic Development Commission intends to provide tax incentives to multi-unit housing developments. Our town certainly needs to increase the tax revenues by attracting businesses to Newtown and providing tax incentives for such purposes is understandable. But for multi-unit housing developers, certainly "No." Multi-unit housing adds higher burden to town services and we do not need our taxes to go higher on that account.

The Economic Development Commission should strive to increase the grand list by attracting commercial entities to the town which help ease taxpayer burden, and not by providing tax incentives to multi-unit housing developers which will result in increase in our taxes.

I urge the Boards of Finance and Selectmen to reject such a proposal.

Sincerely,

Sushil Gupta
