NMS Conducts Student Council Elections

By Susan Coney

Without all the cutthroat tactics typical of a national presidential debate, it was clear that the seventh and eighth grade students running for student council office last October 14 all had the knack for giving persuasive campaign speeches and making promises.

The student body gathered in the auditorium to listen to the well written and smoothly delivered speeches of students running for the offices of president, vice president, and treasurer. Seventh grader Jillian Jagoe ran unopposed for the position of secretary and gave an acceptance speech to the audience.

During the speeches all candidates promised to faithfully attend student council meetings, and to listen and share classmates’ ideas with the council. All stressed their strengths and talents telling the student body what they would do if elected as their representative.

At the close of the presentations, council advisor and teacher Karen Kirch reminded the student body to go back to their classrooms and vote carefully. “Choose wisely because those you elect will be the strength of the student council this year,” she said. Rose Ann Beck and Linda Dale Mulholland are also student council advisors at the middle school.

Ms Mulholland notified The Bee at the end of Friday that eighth grader Stephanie Suhoza had been elected as the student council president, seventh grader Alex Grant was elected as vice president and eighth grader Matt Iassogna was elected to be the treasurer for the 2005-06 school year.

Matt had a clever opening line in his speech to persuade fellow students to vote for him as treasurer. He said, “Two pennies are talking. One stops and says, ‘You know, you and I make cents!’” He emphasized that he was a very good math student and knew how to handle money wisely.

The student council holds monthly meetings with representatives from each cluster attending to share information, ideas and concerns of the entire student body. The student council is involved each year in a variety of service projects to help better their school and the community.
