State Open track and field championships took place at New Britain's Willow Brook Park on June 6, and Newtown High School's squads had some standout performances.

Jack Godfrey was third in the shot-put competition with a throw of 49-11, after a second-place effort in the Class LL meet. Makenna Cerney was sixth in the 300 meter hurdles event, finishing in a school record-setting time of 46.07. With Cerney's result, which followed up her runner-up finish in the Class LL meet, she qualifies for the New England championship meet.

Jackie Sgobbo was seventh in the pole vault competition, clearing the bar at 10-06. Lauren Russo was 12th in the pole vault, clearing 9-06. Annika Alexander was eighth in the discus throw with a finals toss of 107-08.

Cole Terry was 18th in the 300 hurdles, finishing in a time of 41.82, and Terry also competed in the 110 hurdles.

As a team, in the State Open, the NHS girls placed 31st with 5.50 points; Bloomfield was first with 72 points. The Newtown boys were 32nd with six points; Wethersfield won the meet with 61 points.

Doug Russell, coach of Newtown's girls' track and field team, stands with Makenna Cerney after Cerney broke the school record with her performance in the State Open.
