Nighthawk Tennis Teams Take On Conference Rivals

Newtown High School's girls' and boys' tennis teams competed in several matches against South-West Conference rivals in the final days of April and start of May.

The boys defeated Pomperaug of Southbury 5-2 on April 27, and blanked Stratford 7-0 on May 1. The girls, after losing 6-1 to Lauralton Hall of Milford on April 26, dropped consecutive 4-3 decisions to Pomperaug of Southbury on April 27 and 29, and defeated Stratford 7-0 on May 1.

Against Stratford, Marie Ann Tomaj, Amanda Conrod, Lauren Davis, and Mary Celentano all won in singles play. The doubles teams were Emily McCoy and Tessa Leon-Gambetta, Sophie Wolfman and Megan Cooney, and Simran Chand and Lea Sundberg.

In the first Pomperaug match Marie Ann Tomaj won at first singles, Megan Cooney won at third singles, and the No. 2 doubles tandem of Sophie Wolfman and Julia Anderson came out on top. In the second Pomperaug match, Tomaj, McCoy and Amanda Berry at first doubles, and Chand and Hayley Klein at third doubles, were victorious.
