Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming and diving team concluded the regular campaign with three straight victories to finish the year with a 7-3 mark as it gets ready for the South-West Conference championships.

The Nighthawks, after defeating New Fairfield 94-86 on February 11, topped Joel Barlow of Redding 92-82 on February 20, then beat the Stratford-Bunnell co-op 93-73 on Senior Night, February 25.

Newtown Coach Zach Gauvin was pleased with the effort of his team members in the final meet. Newtown lost only to SWC powers Pomperaug of Southbury, Brookfield, and Weston. The Nighthawks will try to overcome those schools in the conference finals. The diving championship is scheduled to take place in New Fairfield at 6 pm on March 5, and the swim events will take place at Masuk in Monroe at 6 pm on March 7.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how well they compete at next week’s conference championships. It’s hard to believe that the regular season is already over, but now’s the time when we get to see what the team is really made of, and see how hard they worked this year,” Gauvin said.
