NHS Student Wins Fairfield County Idol Contest

WESTPORT — Katie McMorran, a sophomore at Newtown High School, won the title of “Fairfield County Idol” and the top prize of $1,000 Sunday, June 7, when she competed against four other high school students during a Harmony on the Sound Chorus event.

Katie was selected by the audience as the winner for her performance of “Gimme, Gimme.”

Auditions were held in March and a panel of judges selected five area teenagers from a group of 30 talented students to compete in the show. The other four students who qualified and appeared were: Arianna Giorgetti from Fairfield Warde High; Erin Murphy and Meghan O’Hara from Fairfield Ludlowe High; and Daniela Sawyer from Staples High School.

The Harmony on the Sound Chorus, a member of Sweet Adelines International, held its annual show at the Coleytown Middle School in Westport. The competition was part of the production that also included performances by the Harmony on the Sound Chorus and several of its ensembles. The chorus also hosted a silent auction and raffle. A portion of the show proceeds are being donated to Westport charity Project Return.

Harmony on the Sound Chorus is a nonprofit group that follows the Sweet Adeline Mission to advance the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performance.
