Newtown High School Boys' Swim Team Gives Weston A Test

Newtown High School's boys' swimming and diving team, on January 30, visited South-West Conference rival Weston, which had lost only to fellow powerhouse and unbeaten Pomperaug of Southbury, and the Nighthawks pushed their opponents before falling 96-88.

Weston sealed the win following the second-to-last event and exhibitioned the 400 freestyle relay race. Both teams stand at 5-1.

Newtown's 200 yard medley relay team of Peter Fagerholm, Colby Delia, Mason Suba, and Xavier Williams placed second in a time of 1:44.35.

David Lawrence placed second in the 200 freestyle race, clocking in at 1:54.63, behind Weston's Nathan Katz (1:53.50), and just ahead of Weston's Matt Babinski (1:54.82).

Fagerholm was runner-up in the 200 individual medley event in 2:03.88, a little more than a second behind Weston's Charlie Palsho (2:02.50).

Kyle Gaynor was second in the diving competition.

Michael Annesley placed second in the 100 butterfly, making his final touch in 56.94, about a second behind Weston's Babinski (55.70).

Suba and Williams had the top two times in the 100 free, finishing in 51.85 and 52.21.

Lawrence came in second in the 500, in 5:16.59.

The 200 free relay team of Annesley, Delia, Rick Irving, and Lawrence, was runner-up to Weston in 1:36.00; Weston's relay finished in 1:35.10.

Fagerholm took the top spot in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.12.

Newtown's fastest 400 free relay group was comprised of Williams, Irving, Suba, and Fagerholm, and finished in 3:33.35.

Sean McCleary took home third in the 500 in a time of 5:47.59. Annesley was third in the 200 IM in 2:10.25. Delia placed third in the 50 free in 23.02 and third in the breaststroke in 1:06.50.

The Hawks will be working hard in practice as they prepare for to visit Brookfield (6-2 overall and 4-2 in the SWC) in a Friday, February 9 meet, beginning at 7 pm.
