Update: This article has been updated to reflect Wednesday's result and the playoff schedule.

Newtown High School's field hockey team, in some ways, avenged its previous two defeats with one overtime victory on October 23.

The Nighthawks beat host Watertown 3-2 in OT, in the second of back-to-back contests between the teams; Watertown spoiled Newtown's Senior Night celebration with 3-1 win at Blue & Gold Stadium, on October 20.

The overtime victory was satisfying for the Hawks not only because of coming out on top, but given it came up short, 3-2 in OT, in an October 18 visit to Immaculate of Danbury. Katie Goyda and Danielle Samson scored in the defeat to Immaculate.

In the win over Watertown, Meaghan Lynn and Rylee Harrell scored in regulation, and Goyda assisted Ali Kelleher on the decisive tally during extra play. This was a nonconference clash between the teams, but benefits the Nighthawks in the state standings.

Newtown went into Wednesday's scheduled season finale at South-West Conference rival Pomperaug of Southbury jockeying for conference playoff positioning. The Nighthawks lost 2-1 to the Panthers and will have a rematch, also at Pomperaug, when the SWC playoffs begin on Saturday, October 28, beginning at 5 pm. Newtown is seeded eighth and Pomperaug is the No. 1 seed.
