Newtown Continuing Education has limited openings available in the following classes. Contact Newtown Continuing Education at 203-426-1787, 9 am to 1 pm, Monday through Friday, for further information on dates, times, and location, or visit newtowncontinuinged.org.Introduction To PowerPoint - A two-class course being offered on Wednesdays, starting May 16, 6:30 pm to 9 pm, $69. PowerPoint is the most commonly used presentation program available, both in school and for business. PowerPoint allows users to create dynamic presentations that can include text, lists, tables, charts, graphics, transitions, and animations. This hands-on workshop will show how to get the most out of PowerPoint using all of the features just mentioned.Savor The Flavor Of Providence, Rhode Island, Federal Hill And Little Italy - A day trip on Saturday, May 19, departs from Cromwell at 7:45 am, $115. Savor the Flavor of Providence, R.I. After arriving the day will begin at Scalio's Bakery, well-known for its fine bread and pastries. A tour and demonstration along with a sampling of pastry and coffee or tea will be offered. The day will continue on to Trattoria Zooma, a Southern Italian kitchen featuring handmade pasta and wood-fired pizza. The chef delights and entertains visitors with a table side demonstration of the techniques used in pizza making. Enjoy a five-course family-style meal, which will include salad, an assortment of grilled pizzas, fried mozzarella, potato gnocchi, penne pasta, and chicken marsala with cannoli and coffee. Following lunch, the group can stroll over to Venda's Ravioli Emporium to shop for fine Italian foods, olive oil, cheeses, and more. The day will end with a riding Tour of Providence with a local step on guide before returning to Cromwell. The Newtown departure will be from the Cromwell Park and Ride lot. Directions to the lot can be found online at ct.gov/dot/cwp/view.asp?Q=259406, choose "Cromwell."The Wonderful World of Edgar Allen Poe - A one-class course being offered on Tuesday, May 22, $59. The course is an introduction for those who would love to know more about one of America's most colorful authors and find out some interesting facts about his works of poetry, his tales of mystery, and his life.Susan B. Anthony & The Suffragette Movement - A one-class course on Thursday, June 7, $59. Learn how women won the right to vote, and how the women of earlier generations struggled to earn that right in an earlier age of history.Chakradance Discovery - A one-time class on Thursday, June 7, 7:30 to 8:30 pm, $35. Students will reach into the depths of their souls and discover the body-mind-spirit connection. Chakradance, through its intimate guided meditation and varying vibrational tones of its carefully choreographed music, provokes spontaneous movement, images, and healing as each of the energy chakras are rebalanced. Students should bring a cushion.Ellis Island, The Statue Of Liberty, and The Empty Sky Memorial - A day trip on Saturday, June 23, departs from Newtown High School at approximately 8 am, $99 per adult or $89 per child, aged 6 to 12. The day trip will visit the Statue of Liberty, the famous colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The ferry departs from Liberty Park, N.J., and the first stop is Ellis Island, where millions of immigrants began their American dream. The group will see the Great Hall, where the immigrants were processed, and the four rooms where immigrants were detained. The group will have the option of experiencing their arrival as if they are immigrants with the new 45-inch audio guide. When the self-guided tour is over, the group can take the ferry to Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty. Lunch will be "on your own" in one of the cafés on either island. Dine in or enjoy a picnic outside with sweeping views of New York. Return by the New Jersey ferry to Liberty Park, N.J. Allow enough time to view the Empty Sky Memorial to those from New Jersey who perished on 9/11, before boarding the bus and departing for home. A round trip ferry ticket will allow people to depart Liberty Park and get off at both Ellis Island and Liberty Island for touring on their own before returning to Liberty Park.
