Newtown Celebrates 100th Anniversary Of Girl Scouts

More than 300 Newtown Girl Scouts and their leaders attended the Promise Circle held on the Fairfield Hills campus on March 12, in honor of the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts in the United States.

The event joined the Newtown participants to millions of Girl Scouts across America as different groups together at the same time during the evening of March 12 to recite the Girl Scout Promise, and kicked off Girl Scout Week across the country and in Newtown.

Once the Promise, pledging to “serve God and my country,” was recited, the girls lit small handheld candles and sang some of the traditional Girl Scouts songs, including “Make New Friends.”

“We were all in tears, it was so moving,” said leader and Middle Gate organizer Heather Smith, whose troop helped coordinate the event.

Cadette Troop 51170 welcomed all the Newtown Girl Scout troops who ranged in age from kindergarten Daisies to tenth grade senior members in the program, and introduced Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra, who declared 2012 “The Year of the Girl.”
