The Newtown Cultural Arts Commission (NCAC) announced July 29 that the deadline for submissions for its 2014 grant has been extended to September 1.

Announced last week, the commission will be awarding two grants of up to $1,000 each. One grant will be awarded to an individual artist living in Newtown and one grant to an arts organization based in Newtown. The individual grant recipient must be at least 16 years of age.

Visit Newtown Cultural Arts Commission’s  website for a complete application. Those applying will be asked to submit an art related resumé, and a sample of their work according to field of study; details are outlined online.

Family members of Newtown Cultural Arts Commissioners and/or NCAC Project Grant Selection Committee members are NOT eligible to apply.

Artists’s Talk

The collage exhibit, “Celebration of Your Life,” currently on view at Newtown Municipal Center and featuring works by Virginia Zimmerman, Sheila Mullen, Meegan Foley and Stefanie Lagana, will conclude Friday, August 8.

The artists will be hosting an informal talk that afternoon from 5 to 7 pm.

They will discuss their history, methods and techniques. They will also be sharing what inspired the created art work. Questions are welcomed and encouraged.

Collograph Printing

Also announced this week is a new workshop, Collograph Printing, to be hosted by NCAC’s HealingNewtown project on Saturday, August 9. A simple form of printing using found materials that are arranged in a collage form, this is perfect for beginners.

The workshop will run from 1 to 4 pm at the HealingNewtown space, the lower level of Newtown Congregational Church at 14 West Street.

Virginia Zimmerman and instructors from The Center for Contemporary Printing will lead the workshop.

Participants will use textured contact papers, tape, string, wire, and found objects to build images. These materials can be cut, shaped, layered, and then stuck to boards. After the collage is created, there will be two methods of printing variations of the image.

There is no charge for the workshop, but space is limited and reservations are requested.
