MONDAY, JUNE 16 – The 11th annual Jack Friel Memorial Golf Scramble to benefit the Newtown Scholarship Association will be held on Monday, June 16, 2003, at Whitney Farms Golf Club in Monroe. Check-in time is 10:30; shotgun at 11:30. The event, sponsored by Newtown Savings Bank, is one of several major fundraisers for the NSA, which awards more than $150,000 annually in scholarships to college-bound high school graduates and continuing students. A tournament entry fee of $150 per person includes golf, lunch, cocktails, and a buffet dinner (dinner only is $50). Team handicaps will be used and plenty of great prizes will be awarded, including low gross and low net scores. MONDAY, JUNE 30 – The Kennedy Center’s 12th annual Charity Golf Classic will be held Monday, June 30, at the Patterson Country Club in Fairfield. Top male and female junior golfers from throughout the state are teamed with an adult foursome in a scramble tournament and are awarded scholarships from the net proceeds. Since its inception, 220 junior golfers have received more than $110,000 in scholarship money. The tournament benefits The Kennedy Center, a nationally recognized rehabilitation agency, which serves more than 1,200 people throughout Connecticut, Boston and New York City. Fee of $300 also includes buffet luncheon, social hour and awards reception, dinner and prizes. Tee off is slated for 12:15 pm. Deadline to sign up is Monday, June 23. MONDAY, AUGUST 18 – The Newtown Junior Women’s Club will hold its first golf tournament on Monday, August 18, at Whitney Farms Golf Club in Monroe. Tee off (four-man scramble) will be at 9 am. There will be first-, second- and third-place prizes, longest drive and closest to the pin prizes, and four hole-in-one prizes (2003 Harley Davidson, Ping golf clubs, titanium golf driver and $250 pro shop gift certificate). Cost is $135 per golfer and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, continental breakfast, buffet lunch and tournament gifts. Sponsorships are also being sought for platinum ($1,500), gold ($1,000), silver ($600), bronze ($225), hole ($100) and friend ($50) levels.
