Strong performances by an outsanding cast highlight playwright August Wilson's story of an African American coule (Washington, who also directed; and Davis) struggling to raise a family in the 1950s. Viola Davis received this year's Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role as well as the Golden Globe honor in the same category for her work in this film, which received Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. Washington earned Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.
