PORTLAND, MAINE â The Portland Museum of Art will present the exhibition of 55 vintage photographs spanning Alvarez Bravoâs entire career, on view January 5âMarch 16.
Lola Alvarez Bravo (1903â1993) is widely recognized as Mexicoâs first woman photographer. As a pioneering figure in the rise of modernist photography in Mexico, she was a profound humanist who used the camera to chronicle the people and places of her beloved country over a six-decade career.
The exhibition is the first major representation of her work in more than a decade, including several rarely seen and unpublished photographs. The show will also present an excerpt from a short film featuring Frida Kahlo made by Alvarez Bravo.
