Lacrosse Teams Battle In Close Games

Newtown High School's girls' and boys' lacrosse teams had hard-fought games on May 10 as the girls outscored visiting Masuk of Monore 9-7 for a Senior Night win, and the boys dropped a 7-6 double overtime battle to undefeated Simsbury.

Julia Sughrue scored two goals and had three assists, Nevan Gattey and Charli Condon both scored twice and added assists, Julia Wiberg and Brianna Sclafani both had a goal and an assist, and Alex Futterman dominated on the draw and had a goal.

Tess Davenport made four saves and Lexi Leidlein had two stops in goal as Newtown bounced back from a 14-9 loss at Ridgefield on May 7.

The boys, coming off a 7-5 loss at Glastonbury on May 7, nearly handed Simsbury its first loss behind a strong defensive effort and solid goaltending from Dave Anderson, with ten saves.

Jared Pearson had two goals and an assist, Matt Meyers scored twice, Layton Harrell and Colin McCafferty both hit the back of the net, and Scott Bauer and Tucker Garrity each had an assist. Mark Urso was 11-for-17 on faceoffs.

In the Glastonbury game, Anderson made a dozen saves between the pipes. Pearson had two goals and an assist, Evan Eggleston notched a goal and an assist, and Meyers and Bauer added goals.
