January 2 Performance Added At

Long Wharf Of ‘Shirley Valentine’

NEW HAVEN — Due to tremendous audience response, Long Wharf Theatre has added an extra performance of Shirley Valentine, by Willy Russell, directed by Gordon Edelstein, and starring Tony Award-winner Judith Ivey. The additional performance will take place Sunday, January 2, at 7 pm.

Tickets are currently on sale for this special performance and range from $40 to $65.

Shirley Valentine has been a hit with both critics and audiences alike. “[Judith Ivey] is also thoroughly likeable and often delightful, one with whom an audience would enjoy spending a few hours,” praised Frank Rizzo in The Hartford Courant.

“When [director Gordon Edelstein] does comedy — even dark-tinged human comedy like this one — he … lets the light shine in big time. And, as Shirley Valentine, Judith Ivey sure knows how to step out into the light,” said Chris Arnott in The New Haven Advocate.

Meanwhile, Julie Stern praised the play as “a delightful concoction, given a fine production, in keeping with Long Wharf’s high standards,” and Judith Ivey, “who gave such a powerful performance as Amanda Wingfield in last year’s production of The Glass Menagerie, has returned to Long Wharf in a completely different role, demonstrating what a fine actress she is” when she reviewed the production in the December 17, 2010 issue of The Newtown Bee.
