It was a meeting at which no action would be taken, only information, First Selectman Jack Rosenthal pointed out Monday night as the selectmen sat to listen to what members of the Library Board of Trustees had to say about their plans to present to the town the third try for the expansion of the Cyrenius H. Booth Library on Main Street. Besides the trustees, others, either for or against the project, were given the opportunity to be heard.

Newtown’s Parks & Recreation Commission may have won the battle Wednesday night at a special town meeting in getting voters’ approval of $118,365 more needed for phase one development of a new town park in Sandy Hook — but the war is still far from over in finding enough playing fields to meet the town’s sports needs. Some 45 voters showed up in the town hall gymnasium for the brief town meeting and approved the additional funding on a stand-up vote, with the exception of two people who were opposed. Phase one of the park on the town-owned Stefanko property off Philo Curtis Road will result in one Little League field, a baseball field, and a soccer field by next year.

Newtown’s planning goals for land use for the remaining 20 years of the century will be defined over the next two years by the Planning & Zoning Commission, working with a professional planning consultant, Technical Planning Associates Inc, and with plenty of input from residents. The commission will review and update the Plan of Development, completion slated for September, 1981.

Laurie Cantalupo, Miss Newtown 1979, has been chosen queen of the Danbury Fair by its president, Fred Fearn. “I wanted someone from around here,” Mr Fearn said. “A good all American girl.” Mr Fearn chose Laurie as the fair queen after seeing her picture in a newspaper.

A 17.6-acre parcel of open space land located on the Lake Zoar waterfront has been recommended for ownership by the Town of Newtown by the Planning & Zoning Commission in connection with the approval of two subdivisions totalling some 140 acres of land off Walnut Tree Hill Road.

Sarah Beers Mitchell, 82, of Cranberry Knolls, Dennis, Mass., retired head librarian of Cyrenius H. Booth Library in Newtown, died Saturday, September 22, in Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness.

With literally no discussion at all the selectmen on Monday night unanimously voted to recommend funding of $1,275 for Newtown’s membership on the board of directors of the Housatonic Area Regional Transit District (HART), which runs a bus system operating in Danbury and Bethel now with expansion planned to New Milford.

OCTOBER 1, 1954

Walter A. Reynolds, judge of the Newtown Town Court and Republican candidate for Judge of Probate of Newtown, told members of the local Young Republican Club and their friends last Thursday evening, September 23, that his predecessors found that the Probate office required their full time and energies and that he felt it could be done in no other way. If elected, he plans no changes in the present Probate office staff, he said.

The Newtown Fish and Game Club made plans for the release of pheasants for this fall’s shooting and modified its membership requirements in the business portion of its annual meeting last Friday night, September 24, in the Alexandria Room of Edmond Town Hall. Roger Treat of Taunton Lake Road headed the slate of new officers which was elected. Robert Lockwood, secretary, presided in the absence of Joseph Marsh, the retiring president. Approximately 70 members attended.

Henry W. Hafer, Sr, has been appointed maintenance manager and plant engineer at the Fabric Fire Hose Company in Sandy Hook, it is announced by William Cole, general manager.

The men’s golf championship of Newtown Country Club was settled last Sunday, September 26, when Mike Hoitko defeated Emmy Farrell, seven and six. The final decision had been put off by the copious rains earlier in the month.

Pvt James Carroll, son of Mr and Mrs Patrick Carroll, returned on Wednesday to Parris Island, S.C., after enjoying a leave at home following completion of his boot training in the Marine Corps.

In reply to a petition signed early last month by 53 residents of Sandy Hook requesting relief of the congestion on Route 34 resulting from the re-routing of US Route 6 and 202 over that highway from Sandy Hook Center to the new Route 6 cutoff, State Highway Commissioner G. Albert Hill indicated last week that no immediate alleviation of the traffic situation can be expected.

Volunteer workers who have been canvassing the town for useful items to offer for sale at the PTA rummage sale next Saturday, October 9, in Edmond Town Hall gym, have come up with such varied items as an electric stove, ice skates, an eight-piece dining room set, bed and springs, a four-burner oil range and a two-burner portable kerosene stove, a Morris chair, lamps, radios and clothing.

Captain Miles, who has been a resident of the town for some time, left town this week. To his credit, it should be said, he paid up all his bills and left town owing no obligations.

William D. Parker, the genial proprietor of the Parker House, and Mrs Edith C. Brown of Springfield, Mass., were married on Saturday, August 17, at Pawling, N.Y.

Richard Egan of Palestine fractured his arm last week while cranking a tractor. Dr W.F. Desmond attended him.

Richard Carmody, popular local manager of Davey Brothers’ Sandy Hook store, sails on Saturday from New York on the SS Carminia of the Cunard line for a month’s tour of Ireland, England and France. This will be Mr Carmody’s second trip abroad since the World War.

The exterior of the Congregational Church edifice is being beautified by a new dress of white paint for the body and green for the blinds. A.B. Nichols has the contract.

Surveyors representing the Danbury and Bethel Gas & Electric Company have been in Taunton the past week surveying for the location of the poles for the electric line. This is glad news for the Taunton residents.

George C. Burr is driving a new Chevrolet sedan bought of Lewis in Danbury.

Mrs Addie Nichols of Mount Pleasant had the misfortune to lose a horse which has been in her family for 15 years.

John T. Pierce, who was the founder of The Newtown Bee and will be remembered by a good many here, was recently married at Norfolk, Va. Mr and Mrs Pierce are spending their honeymoon visiting friends in Bethel and Danbury.

Miss Mabel Sturges was appointed secretary for Newtown at the annual meeting in Danbury last week of the Fairfield North Auxiliary of the Connecticut Sunday School Association.

Mrs A.D. Fairchild has had a fine Round Oak Chief range installed in her kitchen, from the store of E.J. Hall at Sandy Hook.
