MARY MCDONNELL AT JAMES GRAHAM & SONS

ak/lsb set 9/28 #714030

NEW YORK CITY — James Graham & Sons will present an exhibition of recent abstract paintings and works on paper by Mary McDonnell. A dozen oil on wood paintings, some of them as large as 10 feet wide, in addition to 20 more modestly scaled works on paper, will be on view in the main gallery October 12–November 10. This will be McDonnell’s third exhibition with the gallery.

McDonnell is known for her minimal, nearly monochromatic works built up from numerous thin layers of paint. The artist employs a method of addition and subtraction; she pours paint onto a wood panel, and then uses a squeegee or similar implement to pull to color across the surface and scrape off the excess. the resulting scrimlike layers of paint, punctuated by incidental marks produced by irregularities in the wood grain or tools, create a palimpsest effect.

McDonnell was born in Michigan and received her MFA from Syracuse University. She is also represented by Miller Block Gallery in Boston. McDonnell has been featured in Elle Decor and her work has been reviewed in such publications as The Boston Globe, The New York Times and The New Yorker.

The gallery is at 1014 Madison Avenue, third floor. For information, 212-535-5767 or www.jamesgrahamandsons.com
