Hawk Gridders Win Behind Cobb's Six Touchdowns

Led by Hunter Cobb's six touchdowns, Newtown High School's football team posted a 42-19 win over host Stratford, at Penders Field, on September 16. With the win, the Nighthawks improved to 2-0 heading into the Friday, September 23, home game against Joel Barlow of Redding; kickoff is at 7 pm, under the lights at Blue & Gold Stadium.

Cobb rushed for five scores and had a TD reception as he compiled 196 rushing yards on 31 carries, and 78 yards on three receptions.

Newtown built a 28-7 halftime lead and cruised to victory. The Hawks capped the first-half scoring with an 84-yard drive that began with only 58 seconds showing on the scoreboard clock. Quarterback Justin Dunn (9-of-11, 195 yards) had long completions to Ben Mason and Jack Miller and Cobb ran it in from a yard out as Newtown took only 47 seconds to score.

Mason caught two passes for 54 yards and rushed eight times for 50 yards. Miller had three receptions for 63 yards.

Tom Long, Mason, and Jack Phelps had seven, six, and five tackles, respectively, and Cobb, Connor Marlin, and Matt Dubois each had four tackles. Newtown had seven quarterback sacks led by Phelps with three and Derek Ivey with a two. Mark Hall had a pair of interceptions.
