Hawk Grapplers Hit The Mats For Invitationals

Newtown High School's wrestling team placed 11th with 43 points in the Saturday, December 30 Danbury Invitational.Hawks Sixth In SimsburyNHS Tops Bunnell

Joe Zeller was second in the heavyweight division, Aaron Occhipinti placed fourth in the 129 pound weight division, and Justin Bogdanoff came in sixth at 155.

The Nighthawks placed sixth among 22 schools in the Frank Chaves Invitational, in Simsbury, on December 23.

Newtown scored 111 points. Simsbury was first with 175.2.

Occhipinti won the 126 division. He pinned Simsbury JV wrestler Matt Giglio in 27 seconds, scored a 22-11 major decision over Watertown's Xavier Powell, earned a 10-1 major decision against Naugatuck's Matthew Jenkins, and pinned Amity's Adrian Gonzalez in 30 seconds.

At 132, Nik Accousti won three bouts, scoring a regular decision and major decision, and winning via pinfall.

In the 138 division, Fritz Maurath earned a regular decision.

At 145, Bogdanoff won two matches via pin.

Steven Leuci won two bouts via pinfall in the 152 weight class.

At 160, Owen Walsh won a regular decision.

Steven Vournazos won via pinfall and regular decision in the 170 weight class.

At heavyweight, Zeller logged three wins, all by regular decision.

The Nighthawks defeated host Bunnell of Stratford 54-18, on December 20.

The Nighthawks won six matches via pin fall. Results are as follows:

106: Brian Cruz of Bunnell won via forfeit.

113: Double forfeit.

120: Aidan Occhipinti of NHS pinned Micahel Amorando in 1:28.

126: Fritz Maurath of NHS pinned William Rosa in 1:27.

132: Aaron Occhipinti of NHS pinned Sean Abner in 1:29.

138: Nik Accousti of NHS pinned Julian DeMatteo in 2:30.

145: Justin Bogdanoff of NHS won via forfeit.

152: Steven Leuci of NHS won via forfeit.

160: Owen Walsh of NHS pinned Erick Cruz in 2:51.

170: Steven Vournazos of NHS pinned Jacob Halsted in 2:00.

182: Double forfeit.

195: Tyree Hall of Bunell won via forfeit.

220: CJ Falotico of Bunnell won via forfeit.

285: Joe Zeller of Newtown won via forfeit.
