Gymnasts Win Senior Night Meet, Head Into State Competition

Newtown High School's gymnastics team took first place in its Senior Night meet, at Kinetic Kids in Oxford, on February 17. Newtown scored 129.4 points, narrowly edging Oxford with 129.35, and Nonnewaug placed third with 123.15. Results are as follows:

All around: Allyson Kenny was third with a score of 33.7 and Maddie Jannott came in fifth with a 32.2.

Vault: Kenny and Olivia Brosnan tied for sixth with a score of 8.2, Jannott was eighth with an 8.1, and Sarah MacMullan placed ninth with an 8.0.

Bars: Kenny tied for second 8.5, Brosnan fourth 7.8, MacMullan tied for fifth 7.6, Jannott sixth 7.5, and Mary Locke seventh 7.4.

Beam: Casey Sullivan tied for third 8.4, Kenny fourth 8.3, Jannott fifth 8.0.

Floor: Kenny tied for fourth 8.7, Jannott tied for fifth 8.6, MacMullan sixth 8.4.

Also competing: Sammi Olah on bars, Alex Ferris vault and beam, Bella Manfredi, Amanda Brinkmann and Kylie Giroux on floor, and Monika Mihok on vault.

Newtown went to Pomperaug of Southbury for a competition on February 20. New Milford was first with 134.950, Oxford placed second with 132.800, Pomperaug was third with 129.500, Newtown came in fourth with 129.500, and Nonnewaug placed fifth with 127.200. Results are as follows:

All around: Kenny tied for fifth 33.950, Jannott eighth 32.6, MacMullan 11th 31.950.

Vault: Kenny tied for fifth 8.4, MacMullan tied for sixth 8.35, Jannott and Brosnan tied for seventh 8.3, and Kylie Giroux 11th 8.0.

Bars: Kenny fifth 8.5, Jannott and MacMullan tied for ninth 7.6.

Beam: Kenny and Jannott tied for seventh 8.2.

Floor: Kenny fourth 8.8, Jannott tied for ninth 8.5, MacMullan tenth 8.4.

Also competing were Taylor Krikorian vault, Allie Tassiello bars, Liz Marcinek beam, Locke floor and bars, and Manfredi floor.

The Nighthawks will compete in the Class L State Championships at Pomperaug High on Saturday February 25, beginning at 9 am.
