After scratching and clawing to some hard-fought, nail-biting, low-scoring victories, Newtown High School's girls' soccer team put together a pair of offensive outbursts that amounted to ten goals in two nights. The Nighthawks followed up a 4-1 win at Bunnell of Stratford on September 23 with a 6-2 triumph over visiting Watertown, at Blue & Gold Stadium, the next night.

"When we work hard to score goals we're a good team," said Newtown Coach Marc Kenney, whose team improved to 6-0-1. "It takes a little bit of the pressure off, especially because we're getting them in the first half.

Newtown built a 4-0 lead at the half of the Watertown game. In the end, six players scored, and Kenney is thrilled his production is coming from a variety of contributors. The coach noted that the flank players and midfielders are chipping in with goal-scoring contributions.

With senior forward Emily Neave sustaining an ankle injury in the Bunnell contest, and some players out of the lineup with illnesses, Kenney turned to some of his reserves in the Watertown game. The coach said rotating the players who get onto the field is helping build team chemistry.

In the Bunnell game, Sarah Houle scored twice, and Cassidy Kortze and Briann Capoziello also scored. Olivia Caplan, Makenna Cerney, Carly Swierbut, and Capoziello all had assists.

Against Watertown, Nevan Gattey, Houle, Grace Corcoran, Swierbut, Cerney, and Sydney Howard all hit the back of the net. Karsen Pirone had two assists, and Caplan and Houle each had one.

"It feels good but, at the same time, we still need to get better and work hard, Houle said of the recent scoring success. "The next couple of weeks are not going to be easy. We play some tough teams and we need to keep this momentum going."

The Nighthawks, after hosting Weston, which is 2-3 overall, at Treadwell Park, on Tuesday, September 27, beginning at 4 pm, will play defending South-West Conference champion New Milford, which is having a down year and is winless to this point. That's followed by a stretch that features currently unbeaten Pomperaug of Southbury, a tough Lauralton Hall of Milford lineup, currently unbeaten Masuk of Monroe, always challenging Joel Barlow of Redding, and currently unbeaten Immaculate of Danbury (last season's SWC runner-up).
