After going unbeaten in its first nine games, Newtown High School's girls' soccer team heads into a Thursday, October 13 matchup with visiting Immaculate of Danbury winless in four, but not without some positive takeaways - and points - along the way.

The Nighthawks, coming off a 1-0 loss to Pomperaug of Southbury on October 4, salvaged a 1-1 tie at Lauralton Hall of Milford the next day as Emma Curtis scored with only three seconds left in regulation.

Newtown played host Masuk to a 2-2 deadlock in the first game on Masuk's new turf field, on October 7, as Curtis scored both goals. All of the scoring came in a wild opening half.

Newtown Coach Marc Kenney thought his team had a challenging stretch, with three games in four days and, from that standpoint, was pleased with the ties. He wasn't surprised by the outcome against Masuk given the familiarity of/history between the teams. Both squads came into the game with just one loss (each falling by the same score to Pomperaug in fact), and both lineups feature young but talented players.

"I think given the records certainly that plays into it but also, it's Masuk. They're like us in every way," Kenney said. "Our seasons often mirror each other."

The coach thought his team's key to coming away with the tie was "just grit. I think they fought - I think they played hard against a good team."

The Nighthawks (8-2-3) heading into the Immaculate game, have three to go before the start of postseason.
