Gearing Up For Their Greens Sale

The Garden Club of Newtown will hold its annual Greens Sale on Saturday, December 6, from 9 am to 1 pm, at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street.

Garden club members plan for this sale throughout the year as they dry plants from their gardens and collect pinecones and other special items to be used in wreaths, swags and other decorative items for the holiday season. Holly, winterberry and evergreen branches from members will be incorporated into their designs. Pinecone wreaths, which were sold by the club many years ago, will return this year along with miniature boxwood table trees.

Barbara Glass, of Cinderella’s Closet, popular with club members ever since they discovered her creative work at the Wadsworth Atheneum, will be back again this year with her festive holiday pins and other special handmade items. Her unique trinkets and treasures make wonderful and inexpensive hostess gifts and stocking stuffers.

From Flower Buds to Taste Buds, a cookbook filled with recipes from the members of the club and their special friends, is another great holiday gift item that will be available at the greens sale, along with gardening books and color wheels by noted Newtown author and gardener Sydney Eddison. Books or color wheels autographed by Ms. Eddison can be arranged for later delivery.

The Garden Club of Newtown uses the profits from this fundraiser to contribute to the community in many ways, including college scholarships for Newtown High School graduates through the Newtown Scholarship Association. The club also maintains the gardens at the Matthew Curtiss House and the Blue Star Highway Memorial Marker at the VFW Post.
