Garden Conservancy Open Day Program June 8

MIDDLEBURY — during its ninth season, the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Program will share nearly 400 private gardens in 22 states, including 39 gardens in Connecticut, open to the public on 16 separate dates.

One of the first Open Days of the season will be Sunday, June 8. John N. Spain will be opening his property for public visits between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm. Admission is $5 and reservations are not needed. The garden will be open rain or shine.

Garden areas include a rock garden, woodland garden with paths, an outdoor (winter hardy) cactus garden, planted walls and troughs. The rock garden combines dwarf conifers with hardy cacti and many unique garden plants. There is also a 32-foot-long landscaped greenhouse of cacti and succulents.

Mr Spain’s home is at 69 Bayberry Road in Middlebury. Parking will be along the road.

Call 888-842-2442 for more information and wheelchair accessibility.

Additional Connecticut Open Days will take place on June 14-15, June 21-22, June 28-29, July 6, July 20, August 10, September 7, and September 14. Information on all gardens is available in the 2003 Open Days Directory, a soft-cover book that includes detailed driving directions and vivid descriptions written by each garden’s owners, general area maps, and listings of each Open Day.

The Directory also includes a free admission coupon offer (value $5). Copies are $15.95 plus $4.95 for shipping. Call the Garden Conservancy to order with Visa or MasterCard, or send a check or money order to The Garden Conservancy, PO Box 219, Cold Spring NY 10516.
