Garden Club Of Newtown Is Putting Its Imagination To Music

The hills are alive with the sound of … flowers?

“The Sound of Music” will be the theme of a small standard flower show to be presented by The Garden Club of Newtown this May.

The show will be open to the public at Cyrenius H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street in Newtown, on Friday, May 30, from 1 to 4 pm, and Saturday, May 31, from 10 am to 3 pm. There is no admission charge.

This project is being chaired by Marcia Cavanaugh and will feature four design division classes: “Do-Re-Mi” will be a line design using all fresh flowers staged on a table; “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” is to be staged on a pedestal using fresh flowers and may include manmade materials; “Eidelweiss” will be a miniature design in dried materials; and “Maria” will be a basket design using roses.

There will also be a horticulture division, “My Favorite Things,” chaired by Pat Benkovich, which will include container grown plants, perennials, bulbs, herbs and shrubs.

Visitors to show can expect to see plant material in every exhibit. Artificial flowers, foliage, fruit or vegetables are not permitted. Also expect to see live plant material that has been unaltered via dyes or other treatments or applications of substance. Plants may be clipped, stripped, bent or otherwise manipulated.

Any religious symbols will be displayed in a respectful manner and in accordance with local church policies. American flags and other national flags will also be displayed according to proper flag etiquette.

The judges will be looking for and judging the entries based on conformance to schedule requirements, design (including organization of elements and principles of design), artistic concept in both selection and/or organization, expression (the interpretation of the class by the exhibitor) and distinction (a “marked superiority in all respects”).
