‘The War on Cancer’

WATERBURY –– Planning is underway for Teikyo Post University’s second annual Waterbury Forum to be held Thursday, April 10, at 7 pm. The annual event brings top-level experts to campus for an informal seminar with students followed by a panel discussion open to the public. This year’s topic, “The War on Cancer: Winning in Connecticut,” will focus on the current status of cancer research and the role of Connecticut health care institutions and businesses in the progress toward the treatment and prevention of cancer.

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 1.2 million new cancer cases were diagnosed in 2002. Last year more than 555,000 Americans died of cancer –– more than 1,500 people each day. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, exceeded only by heart disease. One in every four deaths in the country is from cancer.

The 2003 Waterbury Forum will examine the war on cancer at both a national and local level. Globally recognized experts from some of the most prestigious research organizations in the world will participate in a “think tank” format, along with local health practitioners and business leaders who battle cancer in Connecticut. The panel of experts will evaluate the latest research efforts conducted at national research centers, but also discuss the pragmatic and available treatments of this disease that can be made available to patients in central Connecticut.

The program, which will be held at the university’s Drubner Center (Exit 17 off I-84), is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, so reservations are required.
