GEORGE SHEDD AT FRANCESCA ANDERSON w/2 cuts

ak/gs set 2-26 #689802

LEXINGTON, MASS. — Francesca Anderson Fine Art, Portraits North, 56 Adams Street, presents “A Retrospective Tribute to George Shedd,” on view through April 7.

George Shedd (1922–2006), a native New Englander, was a well-known and beloved watercolor painter in the Boston area. This exhibit of 26 watercolors are the last of his work available from his family.

Shedd was a member of the American Watercolor Society, The Guild of Boston Artists, The New England Watercolor Society, The Salmagundi Club and the Allied Artists of America as well as the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society, where he was a teacher for many years.

Some of the watercolors are framed, while over half of the show is unframed. Paintings of white clapboard New England homes with American flags, sunlit porches and blooming flowers, are just a few of the well-crafted scenes for which the artist is so well know. Also on display, are a few original inked comic strips from the artist’s Boston Globe strip, Marlin Keel, created during his early career as an illustrator from 1953–1954.

Shedd began his work as in illustrator in 1950, working on the famous Lil’ Abner comic from The Globe until 1952, when he was given the opportunity to create his own strip.

Studying with Albert Corsini at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston as well as receiving his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Shedd’s fine art career, was much larger than his career in illustration.

Over the years, Shedd received many awards, including The Grumbacher Gold Medal, The Andrew Carnegie Award at The National Academy of Design, as well as the Salmagundi Art Club, The Allied Artists of America, The American Watercolor Society and The New England Watercolor Society awards.

The gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. For more information, 781-862-0660.
