Family: My husband, Jean-Henry Mathurin, is the media coordinator at Fairfield University. We have two sons, Seth, who is 25 and lives in Baltimore and is an artist, and Jordan, who is a sophomore a Newtown High School.

Pets: We have a dog, Razzy. He was at the ASPCA in Monroe, rescued from the kill-zone in Alabama and they brought him up here. Razzy is part Rottweiler and part basset hound and is about three years old. We also have a rabbit, Noogie. She lives in the bathroom, which often surprises visitors.

How long have you been in Newtown? We have been here for 22 years. We moved here from Stratford.

What do you like to do in your free time? I work for the Easton Library part-time as a children’s librarian. Even though I spend a lot of time talking to people online and on the telephone for my work, this job keeps me in contact with people. I love talking to the moms and reading to the kids. I sing, I dance, and I perform for the kids, too. I work Sundays in the adult circulation department at Stratford Library. I’m addicted to Goodwill and Salvation Army, and I go to flea markets, tag sales, and the auctions here in town when I can. I read and I belong to a fiction writing class.

Do you have a favorite book? I like to read mysteries and do light reading because a lot of the time I have to read is at bedtime. I want something to read at night that is frivolous.

What is the best thing about Newtown? Over the years I have formed several friendships with other Newtown residents, and I prize those relationships. I love the history of the town, I love the open land, and I love my 1690 house. That’s one of the reasons we moved: I wanted a safe environment for my kids and it has been wonderful.

What are some of the changes you have noticed in Newtown? I am disturbed that many longtime residents have difficulty remaining in Newtown because of the ever-increasing taxes. They, like us, expected to stay here throughout their retirement, but now question whether that is a possibility.

If you could travel to the past or future, which would you pick? As a journalist with an interest in religion, I would like to travel back in time a couple of thousand years to Palestine and see what was taking place at this pivotal time in history.

Do you have a personal philosophy? Try to make someone’s life a little bit better each day. Try to make someone laugh and feel good every day.

Do you have a guilty pleasure? Food! I’m not supposed to eat sweets, but every once in a while I have to have them. If I knew the world was going to end tomorrow I would go out and buy all of the candy bars and ice cream and hot fudge and totally binge out.
