Falbo wins state open title as Hawks place fourth

Newtown High School's Anthony Falbo earned a 6-4 decision over Killingly's Austin Caffrey in the 182 pound weight class championship of the state open, at New Haven's Floyd Little Athletic Center, on February 27.

In addition to Falbo's triumph, 170 pounder Joe Accousti was runner-up, 220 grappler Tom Long took third, and 145 competitor Ed Lovely earned fourth to help Newtown to a fourth-place team finish.

The Nighthawks scored 104.5 points as a team. New Fairfield won the competition with 115.5 points, Danbury was second with 112.5, and New Milford placed third with 111. Windham was fifth with 102 points.

Accousti who, along with Falbo and Long won South-West Conference and state Class LL weight division titles, lost a 3-1 decision to South Windsor's Max Odell in the open.

Long placed third with a 3-2 decision over Simsbury's Jasper Stone in his final bout of the day.
