âDRAMA AND DESIREâ AT MFA, BOSTON
AVV 7-23 #707126
BOSTON, MASS. â The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, will present âDrama and Desire: Japanese Paintings from the Floating World 1690â1850,â on view August 28âDecember 16.
âDrama and Desireâ explores the âfloating worldâ of Edo-period Japan â a place of fantasy, where drama and desire unfolded in the theaters and brothels of the regionâs pleasure districts. It was here that the ukiyo-e painting was born, now the subject of this landmark, MFA-organized exhibition.
âDrama and Desireâ will include more than 80 works by such artists as Hokusai, Moronobu, Kiyonaga and Utamaro, showcased in the screens, scrolls, banners and theatrical signboards they created. The exhibition marks the first viewing in Boston since the 1890s of the museumâs vast ukiyo-e collection.
The museum is at 465 Huntington Avenue. For information, www.mfa.org or 617-267-9300.
