Dorian Quintet With Spencer Myer On Piano, April 12 At Edmond Town Hall

Recognized by critics, audiences and professional musicians alike for its uniquely polished and passionate performances, the Dorian Wind Quintet is known worldwide as one of chamber music’s preeminent and longest continuously-active ensembles.

The quintet has literally been around the world, concertizing in 49 of the 50 United States and Canada, touring Europe 18 times, and playing throughout the Middle East, India, Africa and Asia. The Dorian made history as the first wind quintet to appear at Carnegie Hall.

This ensemble will perform at Newtown’s Edmond Town Hall Theatre on Sunday, April 12, at 3 pm, in a concert hosted by Newtown Friends of Music.

Since its formation at Tanglewood in 1961, the Dorian has collaborated with many well-known artists, among them Phyllis Bryn-Julson, Claude Frank and Lorin Hollander. The quintet has appeared a numerous festivals including the Stravinsky Festival at Lincoln Center and the Newberry Spring Festival in Great Britain.

They have also served as the resident ensemble for the Mannes College of Music and Brooklyn College, among others, and have been in residence at Dartington Hall, Tanglewood Music Festival and the Festival Institute at Round Top, Texas.

Pianist Spencer Myer, considered one of the most important American artists of his generation, will join the ensemble to perform Poulenc’s Sextet for Piano and Woodwind Quintet. His orchestral, recital and chamber music performances have been heard throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa and Asia and have garnered him stellar audience and critical acclaim.

The program on April 12, which spans composers over four centuries, will also include works by Bach, Perle, Poulenc and a sextet by Lee Hoiby, a work which was commissioned by the Dorian Quintet and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1986.

An informal reception following the concert will offer attendees the opportunity to meet and mingle with the musicians.

The box office at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street in Newtown, will open at 2 pm the afternoon of the concert for final ticket sales.

Students K-12 are admitted free of charge when accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. College students with student ID are admitted free of charge.

Parking is free behind Edmond Town Hall, and the facility is handicap accessible.
