Cub Scout Pack 270: Campout At Putnam Park In The Bag, Scavenger Hunt Now Underway

Cub Scout Pack 270 held its first campout of the year October 15–16 at Putnam Memorial State Park in Redding. The outing drew 88 people, 35 of whom were Cub Scouts.

The scouts, under the leadership of John Boccuzzi, Jr, hiked the trails and explored the caves at the park, participated in a flag ceremony, and performed skits at the evening campfire under the stars. For many Tiger Cubs, this was their first camping experience.

The annual fall campout is an event that the scouts and their parents look forward to every year. It was an overwhelming success thanks to the efforts of many individuals, including Glenn Reinhart and Jason Petrelli, who organized the event, and Leon Demers and Tony Mohigel, who spent much of the weekend cooking meals for the group. Plenty of Cub Scout enthusiasm, coupled with a bounty of parental involvement, also contributed to the campout’s success.

The Meat House of Newtown and Mr Mac’s Canteen in Monroe donated more than $200 worth of hamburgers, hot dogs, bacon and eggs to feed the hungry scouts and their parents.

One scout summed up the experience by saying, “This was awesome! I wish we could do this every weekend.”

Pack 270 is based at Middle Gate School with 71 active Cub Scouts in nine dens, and is sponsored by Newtown Lions Club. Information about Pack270 can be found at its website, www.pack270.org.

Additional photos from the campout can be found in this week’s Newtown Bee Facebook photo album.

Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt

Meanwhile, Cub Scout Pack 270 is conducting its second annual scarecrow scavenger hunt. Each of nine dens made an original scarecrow that is currently displayed at a local business in town: C.H. Booth Library, The Toy Tree, Katherine’s Kitchen, Pizza Palace, Andrea’s Pastry Shop, The Meat House, Tumble Jungle, Villarina’s Pasta Shop, and My Place Restaurant.

Game cards are available at each location, and children are encouraged to solve clues on the game cards to locate each scarecrow. Participants will get their game card stamped for each scarecrow “found.”

Several vendors are offering special deals for families that hand in a completed game card, including $1 off any sandwich at Katherine’s Kitchen, $2 off any large pizza at Pizza Palace, and four wooden “nickels” good for a discount on any purchase at Andrea’s Pastry Shop.

The event began October 19 and will continue until October 31, which is the last day to claim special deals offered by participating vendors. Please note there is a limit of one completed game card per family. The event is open to all residents.

“Cub Scout Pack 270 is very proud to be running our second annual Scarecrow hunt,” said Cubmaster Boccuzzi. “In Cub Scouts we teach the boys about community, and what better way to help them learn about the community than working with and supporting local businesses.”
