Cross Country Team Fifth In LL, Qualifies For State Open

Newtown High School's girls' cross country team placed fifth in the Class LL state championship meet at Wickham Park, in Manchester, on October 29. The Nighthawks qualified as a team for the State Open, which will take place Friday, November 4, also at Wickham Park.

The Nighthawks scored 186 points. Ridgefield was first with a low score of 57. On the boys' side, Newtown came in 13th with 321; Staples won the race with 46. Results are based on the top five performances from each school.

Lu Hage led the Newtown girls, placing 15th in a time of 20:18. The rest of Newtown's results are as follows: 33. Camille Johnson 21:03; 40. Lauren Russo 21:19; 44. Erin Tressler 21:25; 54. Taylor Pare 21:45; 68 Madison Findley 22:01; 89. Willow Pears 22:41.

There were 141 runners and 19 teams that placed in the girls' meet. There were 180 runners and 25 teams to score in the boys' race.

The Nighthawk boys were paced by Brenden Reeds and Ryan Escoda, who placed 49 and 51, respectively, with times of 17:28 and 17:29. Newtown's other results are as follows: 65. Joel Duval 17:38; 73. Christian Lestik 17:43; 83. Riley Rising 17:57; 86. Nick Jacobs 18:05; 92. Dylan Bartlett 18:12.
